Phillies’ bats silenced by Cashner, Marlins

Final: Miami Marlins 6, Philadelphia Phillies 0  ❖  Attendance: 16,592

MIAMI — Coming into tonight's game, the Philadelphia Phillies (62-77) were hoping to sweep the Miami Marlins (69-71) for the first time at Marlins Park since 2010. Thanks to the lack of offense and shoddy defense, the Phils ended up dropping the final game of the series. The Phillies had runners on second and third with no outs two separate times and failed to score. Those were the only real opportunities that the Phils offense was given and both were squandered. Overall, the team was 0-7 with runners in scoring position.

Jeremy Hellickson didn't pitch that poorly, in spite of the four runs that scored over his six innings, only three of which were earned. The Marlins scored one run at a time against the righty, and didn't score in conventional ways. Against Hellickson, runs were scored on a ground out, two sacrifice flies and a double play. He only threw 75 pitches through six innings. Ultimately, it came down to the fact that the offense was silenced by Marlins starter Andrew Cashner. Through his five and a third innings, he had nine strike-outs and five ground outs. Cashner was rewarded for his dominance with his first win since joining the Marlins.

The Phillies got off to a hot start in the top of the first against relatively new Marlin Andrew Cashner, who has yet to record a victory since joining the club. Cesar Hernandez singled on the first pitch of the game. Aaron Altherr hit a ball to Cashner, who fired to second in hopes of retiring the lead runner. However, Hernandez was safe, as was Altherr, to put runners on first and second with no outs. After a line out by Odubel Herrera, first baseman Tommy Joseph moved the runners up to second and third on a ground out. Unfortunately, Freddy Galvis struck out to end the inning and the runners were left in scoring position.

The Phillies' wasted opportunity came back to bite them in the bottom of the first. With one out, Ichiro Suzuki tripled into the right field corner. Martin Prado followed with a ball hit to the right of Galvis, who made a spectacular play to get the out at first. Despite getting the second out of the inning, Suzuki was able to score on the play to give the Marlins an early lead. Christian Yelich grounded out for the final out.

The Marlins once again took advantage of an extra-base hit in the bottom of the second inning. Marcell Ozuna led off the inning with a double. A fly out by Justin Bour moved him up to third. Catcher J.T. Realmuto hit a sac fly to deep center field to score Ozuna and extend the Marlins' lead. Adeiny Hechavarria singled on a line drive just out of the reach of Galvis, but he was stranded after Cashner grounded out to end the inning.

The Phillies got into a similar situation in the top of the third as they did in the first. After a strike-out by pitcher Jeremy Hellickson, Hernandez singled. He stole second during the at-bat of Altherr, which proved fruitless as Altherr ended up walking. Hererra grounded out to second to move the runners up to second and third. This was another opportunity for the Phils to get on the board, but it was squandered after Joseph struck out to end the frame.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Marlins struck again. Cashner helped his own cause with a single to lead off the inning. Dee Gordon bunted a ball that dribbled just fair to put runners on first and second. Suzuki singled to load the bases for Prado. He hit a sac fly to center fielder Herrera to score Cashner. Herrera's throw went to second base to keep the runner at first from advancing. That proved to be crucial, as Yelich grounded into a double play to end the inning and prevent more damage from being done.

The bottom of the following inning brought some more unconventional scoring for the Fish. Ozuna reached on a fielding error by Andres Blanco to lead off the frame. Justin Bour followed with a single to right and Ozuna went from first to third. Realmuto once again helped the Marlins tack on a run by hitting into a double play, allowing Ozuna to score from third. Hellickson got the final out of the inning and maintained a relatively low pitch count (75 through six innings), despite allowing four runs.

The Marlins added on to their lead in the bottom of the seventh. Despite walking the first batter he faced, it seemed that Patrick Schuster was going to get out of his Phillies debut unscathed. He got two outs before being relieved by Severino Gonzalez. Gonzalez promptly allowed a double to Prado to knock in his third run of the game. Immediately after, Prado himself scored on a ground-rule double by Yelich. He moved up to third on an infield hit by Ozuna. Gonzalez was able to strike out pinch-hitter Giancarlo Stanton for the final out of the inning, but it was too late; the damage had already been done.

The Marlins' bullpen held the Phillies hitless from the sixth inning on, which made a comeback virtually impossible.
