Canadiens Strike Late to Down Flyers

By Kevin Durso, Sports Talk Philly editor

The Flyers held the NHL's highest-scoring team to one goal through 53 minutes of hockey and were going toe-to-toe with them. One late power play changed everything.

Brendan Gallagher's deflection gave Montreal the lead with 6:52 to play and that was enough for Carey Price and the Canadiens, who defeated the Flyers, 3-1, on Monday night.

A physical game from the start featured back-and-forth action all the way through. Both goalies starred in a scoreless first period, making several quality saves. Through 20 minutes, the Flyers trailed in shots, 9-6.

Montreal kept the pressure on early in the second and struck for the first goal of the game at 5:28. Shea Weber took a shot from the point that hit and broke Brayden Schenn's stick. The shot was low and went right past the skates of Andrew MacDonald and beat a screened Steve Mason to give the Canadiens the lead.

Just over six minutes later, the Flyers finally solved Price. After several close chances, a point shot by Claude Giroux snuck through traffic and deflected off the stick of Jake Voracek to tie the game. It was Voracek's third goal of the season and in the last two games.

Both teams generated quality chances as the period came to a close with Montreal still holding the shot advantage, 22-18, after 40 minutes of play.

The Flyers came out in the third with a lot of jump in their step and opened up an 8-2 shot advantage, but could not solve Price. The Canadiens pushed back in the second half of the period and got a power play with 6:56 to play. They wasted no time taking advantage.

Just four seconds into the power play, a point shot from Alexander Radulov was deflected by Gallagher to put the Canadiens on top.

The Flyers managed to generate a handful of good chances on Price, who was up to the task on all of them, and the Canadiens added an empty-net goal from Radulov to ice the game.

The Flyers return home to face the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night. The opening face-off is set for 7 p.m.
