Phillies fall to Yankees in Grapefruit League opener

TAMPA — One of the best days of the calendar year is the introduction of baseball back into this country. Spring Training is another name for that day, and that day was today. The Phillies took on the Yankees in Grapefruit League action at George Steinbrenner Field in Tampa.

The Phillies are coming off of an exhibition win over the University of Tampa on Thursday afternoon, a score of 6-0. They were expecting to go right into Friday's matchup with optimism around the young players. Unfortunately for Philadelphia, the Yankees also had some introductions to make with their young squad and they did that.

The Yankees made quick work in the game by scoring first, and then not allowing a Phillies hit until the top of the seventh inning. With a couple home runs to play with and more scoring to put the game away, the Yankees started off Spring Training with a 'W,' while the Phillies played tough to end the game, but were unable to walk away with the victory.

As the second batter of the game, Didi Gregorius got the scoring going first for the Yankees, a solo home run on a fly ball to right field off of Alec Asher. Yankees took a speedy 1-0 lead.

It wasn't until the bottom of the fifth, but Aaron Judge added the Yanks' second run of the ballgame, a moon-shot to center field off of Elniery Garcia. That homer gave the Yankees a 2-0 lead.

Miguel Andujar tripled on a line drive to Chris Coghlan in the bottom of the sixth inning, who scored Ruben Tejada. Scott Kingery had a throwing error, which allowed Andujar to score on the little league home run. The Yankees took a 4-0 lead.

The Phillies were finally able to get a run on the scoreboard in the top of the 7th inning when Daniel Nava singled on a line drive to center, scoring Scott Kingery and moving Cameron Perkins over to second base. Phils still trailed the Yankees, 4-1.

Still in the same inning, Brock Stassi grounded into a force out, Ruben Tejada threw to Gleyber Torres. Perkins scored, Daniel Nava was out at second. New York's Ji-Man Choi mishandled the throw and committed a missed catch error which allowed Stassi to advance to second base. The Yankees now led the Phillies, 4-2.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Gleyber Torres hit a sac-fly to Nick Williams in right field. Dustin Fowler scored to give the Yankees a 5-2 lead.

Kyle Higashioka hit a fly ball to left field for a home run off of Sean Burnett to give the Yankees a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The scoring onslaught continued for the Yankees when top prospect Clint Frazier hit a line-drive triple to right field, scoring both Ruben Tejada and Miguel Andujar. Yankees took an 8-2 lead in the bottom of the eighth.

Same inning, Rob Refsnyder singled on a line drive to left field, that brought in Clint Frazier to give New York a 9-2 lead.

The Phillies had a little bit of life left in them, as they transitioned into last-chance mode against the Yankees. Cameron Perkins hit a line drive to right field for the Phillies' first home run of Spring Training. Two batters later, Brock Stassi also hit a liner to right for a solo shot, to bring the score to 9-4 Yankees.

While a little last chance magic seemed to be in the plans for the Phillies, they drop their first game of Grapefruit League play by a score of 9-4 to the New York Yankees in Tampa.

The Phillies will look for a little bit of retribution against the Yankees on Saturday, as the Phillies host their first game of Spring Training from Spectrum Field in Clearwater at 1:05 p.m.
