Phillies prospect Elniery Garcia suspended for PED use

The Philadelphia Phillies have a wealth of pitching talent at the lower levels. Elniery Garcia, one of the more up and coming starters in the minors, has been suspended for 80 games after testing positive for a performance enhancing drug.

According to Reddit, Boldenone undecylenate/undecanoate is a highly anabolic and moderately androgenic steroid. Its primary use is in veterinary medicine most commonly with horses, but has become a favorite of strength athletes and bodybuilders.

Garcia, 22, went 12-4 with a 2.68 ERA last season with Advanced 'A' Clearwater, but started the 2017 campign on the Double-A Reading disabled list after allowing seven runs in just 4.2 innings in three games with the Phillies in Spring Training. His fastball can reach 95 and also throws a plus curveball to go along with a slider and a changeup.

Garcia is on the 40-man roster, but he'll be placed on the restricted list, opening up a spot on the 40-man that the Phillies can use. MLB Pipeline ranks Garcia as the 18th best prospect in the Phillies organization.
