Class ‘A’ Lakewood hurls combined no-hitter against Tebow, Fireflies

By Brandon Apter, Sports Talk Philly editor

Southpaw Nick Fanti hurled 8.2 stellar innings and Trevor Bettancourt closed out the game on Saturday night as the Lakewood Blueclaws no-hit Tim Tebow and the Columbia Fireflies 1-0 at Spirit Communications Park in South Carolina. It was the fifth no-hitter in Lakewood history.

This was the first no-hitter for the Blueclaws since Jeb Stefan, Ramon Oviedo, and Chris Burgess threw a combined no-no in 2013. They threw no hitters in 2006 (Carlos Carrasco & Andy Barb), 2002 (Gavin Floyd, loss) and 2001 (Keith Bucktrot) as well.

Lakewood got their lone run in the eighth inning. Edgar Cabral reached base on an error and made it to third on a bunt by Danny Dardon. Jose Antequera followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.

Fanti, 20, was selected in the 31st round of the 2015 draft by the Phillies. During his 8.2 innings of dominance, he struck out nine and walked three. He put two men on base before being removed with two outs in the ninth. Through five starts this season, he has a 2-0 record to go along with an ERA of 1.48, good for sixth best in the South Atlantic League.
