Phillies erase three-run deficit, walk-off in extras against Nationals

Philadelphia, PA — The Philadelphia Phillies (13-19) trailed by three heading into the eighth, but Aaron Altherr hit a pinch-hit three run homer to tie it and Freddy Galvis' sac fly won it in the tenth as they broke their five-game losing streak against the Washington Nationals (21-10) this afternoon at Citizens Bank Park.

Odubel Herrera had two hits and scored the winning run, Freddy Galvis drove in three runs and Aaron Altherr had one big swing to get the Phils back in this one, helping to snap their skid. Jeremy Hellickson only lasted 4.2 innings, throwing 98 pitches and allowing three runs on five hits while Hector Neris pitched two shutout innings for the win.

Jayson Werth's success against the Phillies continued, hitting two home runs today. He's hit 15 home runs against the Phillies since joining the Nats in 2011, the most of any visiting player against the Phils in that span. His 16 total home runs against the Phillies rank second to David Wright, who has 22 against Philadelphia. 

The Phillies have Monday off before hosting Carlos Ruiz and the Seattle Mariners for a brief two-game set, beginning on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. as Jerad Eickhoff opposes Ariel Miranda.

Jayson Werth got the scoring going in this one, belting a solo home run in the first to give the Nationals a 1-0 lead early on in the game.

The Phillies got their first hit and first runs in the fourth. Odubel Herrera led-off with a single and Maikel Franco reached on an error. Two outs later, Freddy Galvis slapped a double down the right-field line, driving home both Herrera and Franco to give Philadelphia a 2-1 lead. Galvis got caught in a rundown between second and third.

That lead wouldn't last long, though. Jose Lobaton singled to start the inning and moved to third on a Tanner Roark bunt followed by a Hellickson wild pitch. After a sharp line-out by Trea Turner, Jayson Werth struck again, hitting a two-run homer to left to put Washington ahead again, 3-2. Jeremy Hellickson allowed two more runners to reach before being removed for Jake Thompson, who struck out Adam Lind to end the inning.

With one out in the top of the seventh, Jayson Werth singled and Daniel Murphy drew a walk. Anthony Rendon singled up the middle, plating Werth to extend the Nats advantage to 4-2. Adam Lind followed with a sacrifice fly to deep center, scoring Murphy and putting the lead at three. 

In the bottom half of the seventh, the Phillies threatened. Michael Saunders and Andres Blanco hit back-to-back singles, but Freddy Galvis lined out sharply to third and then Andrew Knapp grounded into a double play to end the inning. With one down in the eighth, the Phils got singles from Cesar Hernandez and Daniel Nava. Odubel Herrera couldn't capitalize, flying out to center, but Aaron Altherr made sure that his pinch-hit appearance didn't go to waste. He jumped on the first pitch he saw and blasted a three-run home run, tying the game at 5-5.

Hector Neris set the Nationals down 1-2-3 in the ninth, setting up the Phillies to win it in the bottom half. Andres Blanco drew a walk and Freddy Galvis reached first on a bunt that wasn't fielded cleanly by pitcher Matt Albers. Andrew Knapp couldn't get a bunt down and struck out and Brock Stassi followed with an infield single to load the bases. Cesar Hernandez hit a check swing ground ball and the Nats got the force out at home for the second out and Daniel Nava flew out to end the inning.

Odubel Herrera led the bottom of the 10th off with a double and Aaron Altherr walked. Then, Vince Velasquez came in to sacrifice bunt, but actually reached on a perfectly placed bunt down the third base line. Two batters later, Freddy Galvis hit a sacrifice fly to center, plating Herrera from third to win the game.
