Sixers linked to impending free agent PG Kyle Lowry

LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers swept DeMar DeRozan and the Toronto Raptors 4-0, and rumors have already begun swirling about some of the Raptors' more prominent players futures, including Philadelphia-native Kyle Lowry. The 31-year-old point guard is a restricted free agent this summer and could command a deal that could pay him upwards of $30 million a year. According to Zach Lowe of ESPN, Lowry could be on his way out and his hometown could be a potential destination.

Play hardball with Lowry, and he might leave — just like Al Horford bolted Atlanta after the Hawks haggled over that dicey fifth season. Lowry's a prickly, proud dude, and he will have suitors — including his hometown Sixers. He signed what turned out to be a wildly below-market contract in 2014, and he (justifiably) wants to be paid as a franchise guy. He led the sad-sack Raptors out of the sullen Andrea Bargnani era, to places where they had never been.

While Lowry's three-point shooting ability and veteran leadership are intriguing, signing Lowry to say…a four-year, $120 million plus contract just doesn't make sense for the Sixers, especially with the way they've been building their team. He's coming off a season where he shot a career-high 41.2 percent from beyond the arc and and 46.4 percent overall, his best shooting year since the 2008-09 season with the Houston Rockets. But, he is 31, and point guards don't always age extremely well, so taking a big investment in a guy like Lowry may not be the wisest choice.

This isn't the first impending free agent point guard the Sixers have been linked to. Around the time of the trade deadline, Philadelphia was said to have interest in former Sixer and current Pelican Jrue Holiday. Holiday would probably cost $15-20 million a year, much lower than Lowry, but New Orleans seems intent to re-sign the point guard.

In 713 career games, Lowry is averaging 14.3 points, 5.8 assists and 4.1 rebounds per game.
