NBA Draft Recap: Sixers take two, trade two players in the second round

By Josh Liddick, Sports Talk Philly editor

At the end of Thursday night, the Sixers selected Markelle Fultz with the first overall pick, Latvian PF Anzejs Pasecniks with the No. 25 selection, and ultimately two players in the second round at No. 36 and 50.

The Sixers ended up trading the draft rights of PG Juwun Evans (No. 39) to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for cash considerations, and the draft rights to SG Sterling Brown (No. 46) to the Milwaukee Bucks.

The two players the Sixers ended up drafting in the second round are power forward Jonah Bolden from UCLA and Australia, and French power forward Mathias Lessort

It's very likely that both Pasecniks and Lessort will be considered "draft-and-stash" players just like Furkan Korkmaz (2016), and  Vasilije Micić (2014) are.

Bolden on the other hand looks like he could be coming over from Australia to the NBA for this coming season in one capacity or another, whether that's in the NBA on the Sixers main roster or in the G-League, on the Delaware 87ers.

Here is a little bit of a background of each player taken by the Sixers in the second round.

PF Jonah Bolden, UCLA/Australia

Bolden is an interesting player and has been labeled "a lottery talent hidden in the second round" by many experts. He played for UCLA for a season, as a sophomore, and then left to go play in Serbia. Draft Express had this to say about Bolden:

A large part of Bolden's intrigue as a prospect, in addition to his length and fluidity, revolves around his shooting potential. Bolden has made noticeable strides as a perimeter shooter in his year in Serbia, hitting an impressive 40% of his 4.2 3-point attempts per game, but just 61% of his free throw attempts. He has very good mechanics when stepping into his shots in rhythm, catching and releasing in one fluid motion on the hop, while showing deep range and the ability to make shots off the bounce as well, sometimes after using sharp step-backs off isolation plays.

Bolden is without a doubt a different kind of player, and possesses an ability not only to succeed from being a power forward, but also stretching over and playing small forward as well. Quite the range of abilities from a 6'10" player.

Fran Fraschilla talked highly of Bolden on ESPN's draft coverage.

And what you’ve got here is a unique NBA-style athlete. He shot over 40 percent from three, he runs and jumps and is athletic. And boy – if he would have played with Lonzo Ball this year, he would have been a first round pick. One of the things I like about him is, he played in a league that has recently produced Dario Saric, Nikola Jokic and Jusuf Nurkic. All good young NBA players.”

There really isn't much doubting Bolden's offensive ability at all, but on defense is where success will be noted with more scrutiny in the NBA. According to Draft Express, Bolden "has the size, length and mobility to be a significant factor on this end of the floor, particularly with his ability to switch on screens, move his feet and stay in front of guards."

Bolden has been a player that has been looked at heavily by scouts since he was 17 years old. He's played on teams all over the world since then including UCLA just a couple of years ago.

It's not everyday that an international player drafted by the Sixers has a chance to play in the league right away, and Bolden seems like he wants to change that trend the moment he poses with the uniform.

PF Mathias Lessort, France

Lessort becomes the second player in back-to-back years from France to be drafted by the 76ers, following in the footsteps of Timothé Luwawu-Cabarrot.

As of March 17, when Draft Express evaluated Lessort, he was averaging 19 points, 13 boards, two blocks, and a steal per game for Nanterre in the French League. Lessort's PER(Player Efficiency Rating) was ranked fourth best in the league, which is also part of the FIBA Champions League.

Draft Express scouted Lessort and talked about his build as well as some of his abilities.

Playing with a huge motor, Mathias shows impressive physical tools, playing above the rim with the ease and having great speed in the open court and pick and roll.

Lessort is slightly undersized to play the center position, but he also lacks the scoring ability that most power forwards possess in the current NBA.

At 6'9", I guess you could say Lessort is kind of a positional misfit, if there was such a thing.

Lessort does however showcase his intensity on defense and his length to show that he does indeed belong.

Fraschilla had more big words to say about Lessort as well.

He is a running, athletic, jumping, offensive rebounding animal. He may not come over right now, but he’s a young big man with plenty of energy. And again, as I’ve said many times, the French Pro A league translates to the NBA. Size and athleticism, high energy, under-skilled. I think we’ll see him in the league some day.”

So to wrap it up on another year of NBA Draft Coverage, the Sixers selected Markelle Fultz, Anzejs Pasecniks, Jonah Bolden, and Mathias Lessort with their picks this season.

As it stands, it looks like Pasecniks and Lessort will most likely spend the coming year or so back overseas on their respective international teams, while Fultz of course will be playing on the Sixers right away and Jonah Bolden is trying his hardest to come to the NBA this summer.
