Phillies’ losing streak up to seven games after loss to Red Sox

Final: Boston Red Sox 4, Philadelphia Phillies 3  ❖  Attendance: 37,141

BOSTON — The Philadelphia Phillies (21-42) were hoping to bounce back from last night's extra innings loss against the Boston Red Sox (36-28). That didn't happen. Instead, the Phillies extended their losing streak to seven games and lost in extra innings for a second straight game. One of the bright spots of tonight's game was Phils starter Ben Lively. He allowed three runs on eight hits over seven innings. Lively is the first Phillies starting pitcher to throw seven or more innings in his first three career games since Billy Champion in 1969. Edubray Ramos and Jeanmar Gomez were both effective in relief of Lively.

The offense was painful to watch at times tonight. Despite having 12 hits, the Phils left an inexcusable number of runners on base. Aaron Altherr hit his 10th homer of the season, a bomb that cleared both the Green Monster and the ballpark. Tommy Joseph extended his hitting streak to nine games with two hits tonight.

Looking ahead, the Phillies hope to break both their current losing streak and their losing streak against American League teams this season. They'll have a chance to do that tomorrow when they face the Red Sox again, this time at Citizens Bank Park.

The Red Sox got the scoring started in tonight's game. With one out in the first inning, second baseman Dustin Pedroia singled to left field. Xander Bogaerts doubled to put runners on second and third for Mitch Moreland. He was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Andrew Benintendi walked to score Pedroia from third. Phillies starter Ben Lively was able to prevent any more damage by getting Hanley Ramirez to ground into an inning-ending double play.

The Red Sox offense tacked on another run in the second. Jackie Bradley Jr. led off the inning with a double to left field. Josh Rutledge grounded out to second to move Bradley over to third base. Christian Vasquez doubled to right field to score Bradley. Mookie Betts and Pedroia were retired on a pop up and a ground out, respectively, to end the frame.

The Phillies' bats made some noise in the third. Odubel Herrera walked to lead off the inning. One out later, Aaron Altherr hit a 410 foot long home-run over the Green Monster to tie the game at two runs apiece. Howie Kendrick grounded out and Tommy Joseph struck out for the last two outs, but the Phillies were back in the game.

The tie didn't last for long. After Bogaerts flied out to center to lead off the bottom of the third, Moreland homered to center field to give the Red Sox the lead. Benintendi followed with a double, but was stranded after Ramirez struck out and Bradley flied out to right field.

The Phillies fought back in the top of the sixth. With one out, Joseph hit a ground-rule double to right field. Maikel Franco followed with a single to put runners on first and third with one out for Michael Saunders. He grounded into a force out, with Franco being retired at second. It was close to being a double play, but Saunders was safe at first, which allowed Joseph to score the tying run. Catcher Cameron Rupp's struggles continued, as he struck out to end the inning.

Both teams were held scoreless as the game headed into extra innings. Ultimately, it took 12 innings for a winner to be determined. In the bottom of the twelfth inning, Bogaerts got a one-out walk. Moreland followed with a single to left, on which Bogaerts advanced to third. Benintendi was the hero for the Red Sox, hitting a ball that bounced over the right field fence to score Bogaerts and win the game.

The Phillies and Red Sox both wasted plenty of chances they had to score over the course of the game. The Red Sox ended up being the team that was able to take advantage of a key opportunity.
