Phillies Day 2 Draft Recap: More college prospects in rounds 7-10

Day two of the MLB Draft is complete and the Phillies once again are taking the approach of adding as many college players as possible.

Through 10 rounds, the Phillies have taken one high school player in lefty Ethan Lindow. Supposedly the Phillies like to take high upside guys in their international pool and try to get solid high floor guys in the draft, which is interesting.

Anyway, here's who the Phillies finished out day two with:

Round 7: Nick Maton SS Lincoln Land Junior College

After taking Dalton Guthrie in the sixth round, the Phillies doubled down at the shortstop position by selecting Nick Maton, a hitting machine from the Junior College ranks. At Lincoln Land last season, Maton hit .408, had a .507 OBP, eight homers and added thirty-three stolen bases.

There's also this from Perfect Game:

Round 8: Jhordany Mezquita LHP Dominican Republic

So this is where things got a little weird. Supposedly, the Phillies liked this guy in the D.R but decided not to pursue him because he was moving to the states and they could just draft him here. This is what Keith Law put out about the situation.

Anyway, he's the Phillies' now and it was one of their better picks in my opinion. According to reports, Mezquita sits 91-94 from the left side with easy mechanics and a plus curveball. Yes, I will take this in the eighth round thank you very much.

Round 9: Jack Zoellner 3B University of New Mexico

Another productive college bat. He played first base for the Lobos but the Phillies announced him as a third baseman. Without knowing too much about him, Zoellner seems to have a good approach at the dish. He only struck out 26 times last year while walking 37 times. That shows solid bat to ball contact that I'll take at this point in the draft. He also hit 12 homers and batted .368 with a .470 OBP.

Round 10: Connor Brogdon RHP Lewis and Clark State

The Phillies went back to the Junior College ranks and drafted Connor Brogdon, a 6'6 RHP that is coming off of a 2-0 NAIA World Series that saw him rack up fourteen strikeouts including ten in game one. He seemed to have no problem striking out guys at the Junior College level as he had 99 K's in 80 innings. He also had a 2.91 ERA and only 25 walks on the year. There's not much information on him but I would assume they think he has some upside and that they could sign him for cheap.

On to day three!
