MIAMI — The Philadelphia Phillies (32-61) came into the final game of this series with the Miami Marlins (42-51) with the hopes of securing a series win. They did just that. Phillies starter Nick Pivetta went 5.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out four. The Phils relievers held the Marlins to two hits over the rest of the game and didn't allow any runs. It was an impressive day for the pitchers, but the real story was the offense.
The Phillies bats were out today, notching a season high 20 hits. This was the most hits by the Phils in a game since 2015. Every starting position player had at least one hit, with four players (Daniel Nava, Cesar Hernandez, Freddy Galvis and Tommy Joseph) having three or more hits in the game. The standout was Nava, who had four hits and two RBI. Rookie Nick Williams continues to hit well in the big leagues and is the fourth Phillie since 1913 to have four straight multi-hit and multi-RBI games. The last time that the Phillies scored 10 or more runs in a game was June 5 of this season against the Atlanta Braves.

The Phillies struck first in the game. With one out in the first, Freddy Galvis was walked. Nick Williams followed with his first Major League triple to score Galvis and get on the board. Maikel Franco followed with a sacrifice fly to score Williams and extend the Phils' lead. Daniel Nava and Tommy Joseph followed with back-to-back singles, but Odubel Herrera was retired on a pop out in foul territory to end the frame.
The Marlins fought back in the bottom of the inning. After a groundout by Dee Gordon, Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton followed with a monster homer to dead center field to cut the Phils' lead in half. Phillies starter Nick Pivetta was able to retire Christian Yelich and Marcell Ozuna on a strike-out and a ground out, respectively, for the last two outs of the inning.
The Marlins tied the game in the third. With two outs, Yelich walked. Ozuna followed with a single to put runners on first and second for Justin Bour. A wild pitch was thrown, allowing Ozuna and Yelich to move up to second and third, respectively. In the same at-bat by Bour, another wild pitch was thrown and Yelich scored. Pivetta was able to strike out Bour for the final out, but the damage had already been done.
The Phils took the lead in the fourth. After a strike out by Herrera, catcher Andrew Knapp singled to center field. He moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Pivetta. A single by Cesar Hernandez scored Knapp to give the Phillies a 3-2 lead. Galvis followed with a double to put runners on second an third for the hot hitting Williams. Unfortunately, he struck out for the third out of the inning and the Phils were unable to capitalize on the two runners in scoring position.
The Phillies tacked on in the fifth. Franco and Nava led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Joseph followed with a ground out to first that moved the runners up to second and third. Herrera was intentionally walked to bring Knapp to the plate. He hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Franco and move Herrera and Nava up to second and third, respectively. Pivetta grounded out to end the frame.
The Phils broke the game open in the sixth inning against Marlins reliever Nick Wittgren. Hernandez led off the inning with a single to shortstop Miguel Rojas. Galvis hit his second double of the game to put runners on second and third with no outs for Williams. He walked to load the bases. Franco popped out for the first out. Nava picked him up with his fourth hit of the day: a single to center field to score Hernandez and Galvis. One out later, Herrera doubled down the left field line to score Williams. This put runners on second and third for Knapp. Wittgren opted to intentionally walk him to load the bases for Pivetta. He struck out to end the inning. However, the Phils were able to extend their lead and give their starter some breathing room.
It turned out that Pivetta needed that breathing room in the bottom of the sixth. Yelich led off the inning with a homer to center field. After a line-out by Ozuna, Pivetta was taken out of the game in favor of Hoby Milner. He and fellow reliever Ricardo Pinto got the final two outs to end the inning.
The Phillies' bats weren't done. Knapp led off the top of the ninth with an infield single. One out later, Hernandez singled and Knapp advanced to third. Galvis got an infield single of his own to load the bases. Williams hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Knapp. Franco followed with a double to score both Hernandez and Galvis and get the Phils' run total to double digits. Nava walked and Joseph singled on a sharp grounder to third to load the bases for Herrera. He was retired on a fantastic diving catch by Yelich in center field for the third out. This was more than enough run support for the Phillies' pitchers today.
