Sixers GM Bryan Colangelo’s aggressiveness shows his desire to win

By Josh Liddick, Sports Talk Philly editor

The past weekend has come and gone, and while Free Agency still goes on, it's safe to say that the Sixers have finished their transactions and now wait until July 6 to sign their players to contracts.

Bryan Colangelo said that the team was going to target certain free agents with only one-year deals. While a one-year deal was the smartest option, it was just tough to see guys like J.J. Redick and Amir Johnson take deals like that.

But they did. Colangelo worked his GM magic perfectly and got the guys he wanted.

Colangelo made the right calls, was aggressive, and showed that he can be as formidable of a general manager as anyone else around the league.

For the last year, Colangelo has been on the wrong side of Sixers nation, with his poor job of handling the Joel Embiid knee injury, Ben Simmons' uncertainty, and then the Nerlens Noel trade to Dallas that was too lopsided in the Mavs' favor.

Sixers fans saw Colangelo has a guy who had no respect for Sam Hinkie's 'Process,' while the term is what the city has lived by for the last five years.

Since Colangelo traded Ersan Ilyasova to Atlanta to free up minutes for Dario Saric, he has gradually started to redeem himself a little more and more.

As the offseason started up, it seemed more than likely that the Sixers would be standing pat at number three overall and taking a player that would have landed to them in the NBA Draft.

However, Colangelo knew that his player was going to go number one no matter what, so he traded three and some other future picks with protections to get his player in Markelle Fultz at number one.

Agressiveness. Sheer aggressiveness.

For the first time in his tenure as GM, Bryan Colangelo gave the Sixers' players and fans exactly what they wanted. Markelle Fultz and a chance at greatness.

Adding Redick to the team was a necessary move to give them a chance at having one of the best veteran three-point shooters in the NBA today. It's not every day you get to add a 40+ percent three point shooter to your roster.

With a one year, $23 million deal and flick of the magic wand, Bryan Colangelo made it happen. People said(including myself) that Redick wouldn't take a one-year deal, but Colangelo knew he could get Redick to sign anyway.

Redick was offered longer term deals with other teams, but Colangelo made it happen with the Sixers.

Getting Amir Johnson, a BC guy from Toronto, to play for the Sixers at one year, $11 million was another calculated move by Colangelo. Johnson is a veteran presence, with great offensive abilities, that will serve as a primary bench player at power forward.

With the East now heading into a direction of uncertainty with so many star players heading West, it's oddly interesting that many players either went to a Western Conference team or the Sixers it seems.

It's obvious that players want to go to the Sixers because they're are on the up-and-up, and Bryan Colangelo is a key reason for that.

Colangelo has a clear vision for his team now, and for the first time, he has shown that he isn't the enemy Sixers fans have made him out to be.
