What we learned from the 2017 Sixers Summer League team

By Josh Liddick, Sports Talk Philly editor

It's crazy to think that the 2016-17 season came to a close a little over three months ago. The NBA Draft has passed, and now so has Summer League.

Pretty much, all that is left to be done before the Sixers take the floor in front of a sold out Wells Fargo Center, is the preseason.

But what was the overall opinion that was had when watching the young Sixers players take the court in the last week in a half?

Who stuck out as being someone hopeful? Who stuck out as not even deserving a future chance to play for the Sixers or any team for that matter?

There were certainly a couple of players that were almost a sure fire lock of being a player that would contribute right away and show they belong on the Sixers when the season tips off this fall.

Markelle Fultz and Timothé Luwawu-Cabarrot are the only two players that are locked into the Sixers roster at season's start, in my opinion.

There are a few players that could find themselves inputted into deep bench roles at the bottom of the rotation, but for the most part, those two players are going to get significant playing time this upcoming season.

For Fultz, the Summer League wasn't too kind for him, as a sprained ankle in the opening game of the Vegas portion left him limp and out for the remainder of the Summer. Fortunately, the injury won't impact his future with the team this season, as the injury is looked at to be minor.

In the games that Fultz was able to play in Utah, he played a big role for the team, and showed everyone a glimpse of the kind of player that he is going to be for this franchise. In fact, he showed exactly why he was taken with the first overall draft pick.

There were moments in Utah when the Sixers looked very out of it, and Fultz stepped in and helped the team get back into shape and come back on teams.

There is no shortage of the possibilities Fultz will bring to the Sixers heading into the future, as he will make an impact in the starting lineup on Opening Night.

For TLC, he also got injured during the Vegas opener, as he was forced to receive five stitches for a lip laceration. The injury didn't hinder him the subsequent games, as he played a significant scoring role for the team.

The positive thing for TLC was his prior Summer League experience, which for any young team, it plays a big role and helps players understand what goes into preparing for the summer league in matchups with other young players.

The players that really stood out for me in terms of the future player they are going to be is Alex Poythress and Jonah Bolden.

I think Sports Talk Philly's Jesse Larch would agree with me that the play we saw from Alex Poythress was nothing short of surprising.

Last season, when the league granted the Sixers an injury exception to sign Poythress to a small contract, it seemed like he would serve as nothing more than a typical bench player.

Poythress played well in a few games for the Sixers last season, but his role was uncertain for this upcoming season for the Sixers.

It was obvious that Poythress felt he had to do what he had to do this summer in order to impress enough to keep his main roster spot. In four games at around 23 minutes per game, Poythress averaged 12 points, 4 rebounds, and a block per game for the Sixers.

What the stat line doesn't show you is the energy Poythress gave to his team.

I think out of all the players on this roster this summer, Poythress played the best basketball for a player trying to fight for a spot on the team.

Obviously, a lot can change between now and October, but it's looking promising that Poythress will have a Sixers uniform on for opening night.

Jonah Bolden really impressed this summer in a lot of different ways. The second-round forward from Australia turned a few heads when he announced he would be coming over for the summer and showcasing his abilities on the NBA stage.

From the moment he was drafted, and I did a little bit of research into Bolden's game, I was blown away and convinced that this kid would be special player for the Sixers.

He has the ability to have a game-changing defensive stature, and also play a unique offensive game, especially from long-range.

It's always intriguing to see a player of his size and strength able to play the perimeter just as well as other stereotypical wing athletes.

Bolden is a gamer, and his ceiling is so high. It's looking more and more clear that Bolden will spend another season overseas, but the potential for his game to be even greater than it is now, a year from now, is astounding.

Bolden will certainly have a home on the Sixers main roster in 2018-19.

The Sixers had players that started off shaky, and ended up transforming into quality talents as they got more comfortable playing this brand of basketball.

Of course, the reference is to 19 year-old Furkan Korkmaz from Turkey, who struggled to find his groove in the early games, but transformed into the player we had hoped to see from the very start, especially in the last couple games.

Korkmaz didn't nearly shoot from the three point line nearly as much as people around the league were expecting, but the style of play he had in other areas were ones that we didn't even think he had in him.

He played an incredible role of being a facilitator and making plays passing the ball more so than shooting the rock.

I think he found a way in the later games to get more comfortable in his own shell, instead of the beginning of the summer when it looked as if Korkmaz was just running around the court, not knowing exactly what he would be doing with himself.

Korkmaz was certainly a member of the main roster when the summer started, but I think the G-League would be a really good option for Furkan in order to continue to understand the United States basketball play a little more and kind of find a way to shape a mold for himself.

Although, the question still is there whether or not Korkmaz will even be allowed to participate in G-League play, which would have him end up playing on the main roster anyway, but it will definitely be in a limited role at first.

It looks as if the Sixers will use the remainder of the players that played this summer as Delaware 87ers, or on other teams. Aaron Harrison was another player that shined for the Sixers this summer, but he will almost definitely find himself playing for the Sevens once again.
