Hoskins to play left field in Triple-A, could join Phillies soon

The Phillies could call-up one of their most offensively talented prospects very soon. Blocked at first base by Tommy Joseph, Rhys Hoskins has been extremely productive in Triple-A and he may get a chance to join the big league team, but not at the position he’s used to. Hoskins is slated to play left field for Triple-A Lehigh Valley tonight. With Aaron Altherr on the disabled list once again, the Phillies have an open outfield spot and it looks like the organization will give Hoskins an opportunity to play fill-in.

Hoskins will play left field Monday night for the triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs. It will be his 453rd career game in the minors and the first time he mans a position that is not first base. The last time he played in the outfield was in 2012 as a freshman at Sacramento State. He is still viewed by team officials as a first baseman, perhaps the starter there in 2018.

But this is a way — with Aaron Altherr on the disabled list — to fill a current outfield hole in the majors and reward Hoskins for his minor-league production. If the left-field experiment is not a disaster, the power-hitting prospect could be in the majors within a few days. [Philly.com]

Hoskins just recently became the single-season home run leader in Ironpigs franchise history, blasting 27 homers in 112 games, passing Andy Tracy’s 26 from 2009. Overall this season, Hoskins is slashing .280/.385/.570 with 23 doubles, 27 homers, 84 RBIs, 75 runs scored, 73 strikeouts and 64 walks.

The last time the Phillies attempted to move one of their first base prospects to the outfield was with Darin Ruf. Ruf slugged homers in the minors, but could never quite replicate his success in the big leagues, potentially due to inconsistent playing time. Ruf was also not as highly-regarded as a prospect like Hoskins. The Phils eventually switched him to the outfield, an experience that never really quite worked.

Hopefully this experiment will garner a different result.
