Okafor on future: A new playing scenario “might be better than what it is now”

By Josh Liddick, Sports Talk Philly editor

It seems as if it's been a lifetime since Sixers center Jahlil Okafor wasn't the subject of some kind of trade rumor or speculation. For as long as we can remember, Okafor has been the guy everyone has sought out a way to get rid of him.

Two trade deadlines over the past two seasons have come and gone without Jah taken off the Sixers hands, and then after this year's date, the Sixers pretty much decided that maybe it was time to consider the future of Okafor as a member of the team for good.

The NBA Draft has come and gone, with everyone talking highly of this "new-look" 76ers franchise, with good times noticeably on the horizon.

But we seem to forget that Jahlil Okafor is still a member of this team.

The 2015 No. 2 overall pick by the Sixers is still walking around Philadelphia representing the Sixers, and most people have forgotten about him.

The problem with Jah is that he can hardly hold his own on defense, but he pretty much only excels in post situations.

Okafor and Joel Embiid can't co-exist on the floor at the same time, and the only role Okafor plays at this point is a glorified backup center, and even then, that role is seemingly in the hands of Richaun Holmes.

So what exactly do you do with a guy like Okafor?

Can you actually convince a team that Okafor still has loads of potential and a future in this league, to the point where you can get something for him? Or do you just wait it out and wait for his contract to expire, leaving him a free agent?

Jahlil Okafor was interviewed by Tom Moore of the Courier Times today, and Okafor seems like he realizes that maybe Philadelphia isn't the best situation for him after all.

"I've heard trade rumors and stuff like that, and I realize that having a new scenario, I think it might be better than what it is now, but when it comes to the NBA, this is all I know. Wearing a Sixers uniform, the city's been great to me, my coaches have been great, and my teammates have been great. I couldn't be happier."

It seems we've been hearing trade rumors for quite some time, but it also seems like all the scenarios that include Jahlil don't come to fruition.

Only time will tell what comes next for Okafor, but for the time being, he's still a member of the Sixers, and will have to try to contribute in one way or another.
