Phillies dominate Marlins behind Leiter, Hoskins

Final: Philadelphia Phillies 8, Miami Marlins 0  ❖  Attendance: 19,161

PHILADELPHIA — After losing both games of yesterday's doubleheader, the Philadelphia Phillies (46-79) were looking to bounce back in tonight's game against the Miami Marlins (62-63). They were able to do just that. Mark Leiter Jr. was fantastic, allowing one hit and no runs over seven innings. He didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning, which was impressive in itself. Luis Garcia and Hector Neris combined for two scoreless innings of relief.

The Phillies' bats played a big role in tonight's win. Rhys Hoskins was the star at the plate, hitting a double and a homer and knocking in five of the Phils' eight runs. Hoskins has now hit seven home-runs in his first 14 Major League games. Freddy Galvis, Tommy Joseph and Jorge Alfaro each recorded a RBI, and every starting position player recorded a hit, with the exception of Maikel Franco.

It was an excellent night all around, and hopefully the Phils can carry the momentum into the series finale tomorrow.

WP: Mark Leiter Jr. (2-3, 3.86 ERA)  ❖  LP: Justin Nicolino (2-2, 5.45 ERA)

The Phillies got off to a good start against Marlins starter Justin Nicolino. With two outs, Nick Williams singled to center.  Rhys Hoskins followed with a walk to put runners on first and second for Tommy Joseph. He doubled to left field to score Williams and move Hoskins up to third. Maikel Franco was retired on a fly out to end the inning and leave two runners in scoring position.

The Phils tacked on in the third.  Cesar Hernandez led off the inning with a triple.  He scored on a single by Freddy Galvis to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead.  Williams followed with a single to put runners on first and second with no outs for Hoskins. He homered into the second deck of the left field seats to make it a 5-0 lead.  After a strike-out by Joseph, Franco walked. Pedro Florimon followed with a single to left field to put runners on first and second for the second time in the inning. Catcher Jorge Alfaro doubled to left field to score Franco. This marked the end of Nicolino's outing and reliever Odrisamer Despaigne entered the game.  Phillies starter Mark Leiter Jr. lined into a double play to end the inning.

The Phillies continued to add on in the sixth inning. With two outs, Galvis and Williams got back-to-back walks. Hoskins followed with a double into the left field corner to score both runners. His RBI total for the night was now up to five. Joseph popped out for the third out. By that point, the Phils had more than enough runs to secure the win.
