The Phillies ventured where they really wished they would not have to go. Center fielder Odubel Herrera, batting .380 since the All-Star Break and currently in a 17-game hitting streak, was placed on the 10-day disabled list, reports many outlets, including Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly. In game 17 of that streak, Herrera pulled his hamstring, to the point that appears to be something to keep him out of action for at least 10 days. The Phillies have not yet announced a corresponding move.
After last night’s loss to the Giants, CSN Philly had Phillies manager Pete Mackaninon record saying that a move could be a possibility. “He might be going on the DL. We’re thinking about it”, said Mackanin to CSN Philly. The Phillies already added Florimon to the 40-man roster. The only healthy position players left are outfielder Dylan Cozens,, who is struggling mightily at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, and first baseman Brock Stassi, who the Phillies have thrown into the outfield at times.
Rookie outfielder Nick Williams will once again start in center field for the Phillies Friday night. Williams, a solid defender who probably profiles best in right field, has filled in capably for Herrera in the interim. Outfielder Cameron Perkins can also help in center field, but does not have the bat that Williams and converted first baseman Rhys Hoskins can give the club. The Phillies have been giving at bats in right field to Baltimore Orioles salary dump Hyun Soo Kim.
If the Phillies make a move, it could be to add a pitcher. Jake Thompson was scratched from his start for the IronPigs yesterday afternoon with no real explanation. Thompson could start in the Phillies doubleheader on Tuesday against the Marlins. Ben Lively is also on the 40-man roster and made some appearances for the Phillies.
The Phillies are already without outfielder Aaron Altherr, leaving two holes in the Phillies outfield.
