Sixers Mailbag: Furkan Korkmaz’s role, Minutes increases, McConnell’s future

By Josh Liddick, Sports Talk Philly editor

I figured it had been enough time since the last Sixers mailbag was conducted on Sports Talk Philly, and with the Sixers' season just around the corner, I was wondering what you fans are thinking about this current team heading into the upcoming year.

Here are a few questions that were asked in this Sunday edition of the "Sixerdelphia Mailbag."

TO: "Why bring Furkan over now? JJ (Redick), TLC, Sauce (Stauskas) make the '2' more crowded. Think another year overseas would have been better?"

I think this is an interesting concept, especially since I think the whole reason Furkan was brought over this soon is to get him more experience now rather than later.

You have a very experienced shooting guard in JJ Redick, who is almost definitely acting as a mentor towards Korkmaz. I don't think TLC and Stauskas are a threat to the development of Korkmaz, because if Furkan has a decent season off the bench this season, the Sixers might feel comfortable enough to let Redick walk in 2018, which would slide Korkmaz into a starting role, which would be the goal any way.

I do believe that because of this, in 2018, Korkmaz and TLC will be the SG's, and Stauskas will be finding a brand new home elsewhere.

GG Ross: "Which player has the biggest Minutes Per Game increase (Embiid, Holmes, TLC) and the biggest MPG decrease (TJ, Stauskas, Jah) in 2017/2018?"

Another interesting question, and if we're picking from the first three for biggest minutes per game increase, then, barring injury, Embiid will almost definitely have the biggest MPG increase from last season.

Following suit, if Embiid doesn't play much due to injury and he's on minutes restrictions, that would give Holmes more of a minutes increase.

So in finality, it's a toss-up between Embiid and Holmes for that one.

And for MPG decrease, it's undoubtedly TJ McConnell here.

With Jerryd Bayless, Ben Simmons, and Markelle Fultz infiltrating the point guard role, seemingly simultaneously, TJ will unfortunately be riding the bench for most of this upcoming season. I just don't see a scenario where TJ gets anywhere near the amount of minutes he was playing last season in a starting role.

Jesse: With Bayless's ability to play the one and shoot, is TJs role disappearing in this new Simmons run offense?

Kind of piggybacking off of GG Ross' question, I don't believe TJ has much of a role in a Simmons-run offense.

It's unfortunate, because I personally really like McConnell, because I think his grit and determination are the very thing the Sixers are running with game after game.

However, basketball is a business, and McConnell just doesn't fit the future plans the Sixers are trying to work with.

I will say that I think McConnell, if he works hard enough to shoot, can overtake Bayless as the second option.

And let's be honest, I think the Sixers fans would agree with that statement as well.
