The Phillies will have the No. 3 pick in the 2018 MLB Draft

For the second time in three seasons, the Philadelphia Phillies will have a top five pick in the MLB Draft. They won't, however, have the No. 1 pick for the second time in three years.

With a season-closing win over the New York Mets Sunday, the Phillies finished off their season at 66-96. That was the third worst regular season record of any team in the league, meaning that general manager Matt Klentak and the team will have the No. 3 pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, which will take place next June.

For much of the season, the Phillies had the worst record and appeared likely to land the No. 1 pick. A 6-222 month of May propelled the Phillies to the worst record at the All-Star Break, as they were 29-58.

However, Odubel Herrera and Aaron Nola bounced back from their May struggles to have pretty productive seasons. Now former manager Pete Mackanin also got an infusion of young talent in the second half, as top prospects Rhys Hoskins, Nick Williams, J.P. Crawford and Jorge Alfaro all played important roles for the team down the stretch. Following a disastrous first half of the season, the Phillies went a respectable 36-38 after the All-Star Break, including posting winning records in two of the three final months.

The Detroit Tigers, who went 25-49 after the All-Star Break, will have the No. 1 overall pick. The San Francisco Giants, thanks to a walkoff home run from Pablo Sandoval, will pick at No. 2. The rest of the National League East will pick as follows: New York Mets – No. 6; Atlanta Braves – No. 8; Miami Marlins – No. 13 and Washington Nationals – No. 27.

The Phillies have had the No. 3 overall pick three times in the history of their organization. In 1972, they selected RHP Larry Christenson with the third pick. Two years after that, in 1974, they selected outfielder Lonnie Smith. Most recently, the Phillies had the pick in 1990, when they selected future Wall of Famer Mike Lieberthal.
