Konecny Plays Hero in Overtime Win for Flyers Over Capitals

On Thursday night, it was Travis Konecny setting up Sean Couturier for the game-winning goal in overtime. On Sunday, Konecny handled business himself.

Konecny scored 27 seconds into overtime to give the Flyers a 2-1 win over the Washington Capitals on Sunday afternoon at Capital One Center.

The first period was a feeling out process for both teams. The Flyers came out with some early jump, but the Capitals controlled most of the period.

Brian Elliott was solid in net in the first, making 10 saves, including stopping a pair of shots on a two-on-one for Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov and making another point-blank stop on Ovechkin from the slot late in the period.

The Flyers had the only power play of the period, but failed to do anything with it.

Shots were 10-8 Washington after a scoreless first period.

The Flyers got an early power play in the second, which started them on an improved possession period. The Flyers didn't score on the power play, but did finally break the ice not long after.

Off a rush, the puck went behind the Washington net and was quickly centered in front from Valtteri Filppula to Michael Raffl. Raffl's quick shot caught Braden Holtby by surprise and beat him short side to give the Flyers the lead.

The Flyers had to kill off one penalty and Elliott made another big save with a minute left to keep the Flyers in front. But Claude Giroux took a slashing penalty on the play to put Washington back on the power play, giving them a chance to even the score before the period ended.

They did just that, as the Capitals cycled the puck and got it to Ovechkin from his spot at the top of the left circle. His one-timer didn't miss, tying the game at one with 15.8 seconds left in the period.

Shots through 40 minutes were 20-18 Capitals.

The Capitals controlled the early part of the third period, holding the Flyers without a shot for the first 10 minutes of the period. The Flyers did get a great chance to go back in front with a power play near the halfway point of the period, but failed to score.

The Flyers had to dodge a bullet of their own, as Raffl took a tripping penalty with 5:20 to play. The Flyers turned in a strong penalty kill, allowing just one shot on the power play for Washington with just five seconds remaining on the man advantage.

The two teams played the remaining three minutes with a couple close chances, but settled to get the game to overtime.

Just like on Thursday night, the Flyers wasted no time in taking care of business in the 3-on-3. With the same trio on the ice, Konecny played hero this time, scoring 27 seconds into the extra session to give the Flyers the win.

Elliott made 27 saves in the win. Holtby stopped 21 of 23 shots in the loss.
