The Philadelphia Phillies kick-off their final full week in Florida on Monday against the Red Sox and they'll have some difficult roster decisions to make as the week progresses. They open their 2018 campaign on March 29 in Atlanta and there are a few guys on the roster bubble heading into the home stretch of Spring Training.
One of the more crowded 40-man roster positions is catcher. Jorge Alfaro will almost definitely be getting the every day job and it looks like switch-hitter Andrew Knapp will serve as the back-up. With two young backstops ready to take the reigns in Philadelphia, 29-year-old Cameron Rupp could be on his way out. According to Matt Gelb of The Athletic, the Phillies have made Rupp available to other teams. If they don't find a suitor, it seems likely they'll release him.
One player whose 40-man roster spot appears to be in peril is Cameron Rupp. Two sources said the Phillies have made the 29-year-old catcher available to other teams. If they cannot find a match, the Phillies could release Rupp and pay him one-fourth of his non-guaranteed $2.05 million deal.
After hitting .252 with 16 homers as the Phillies primary catcher in 2016, Rupp's batting average and on-base percentage slipped to .217 and .299, respectively. He took a back seat to top prospect Jorge Alfaro as the season was in the final month and he slashed .318/.360/.514 in 107 at-bats. That stint alone seemed to give Alfaro the edge for the 2018 starting job. Rupp is hitting .214 with a homer and 13 strikeouts this spring while Alfaro is batting .276 with an OBP of .382, hitting a double, two homers and six RBIs.
As for the backup spot, Andrew Knapp hit .257 in 56 games last season and can hit from both sides of the plate. He posted a .368 OBP in 171 at-bats. The Phillies value guys who can get on base, so Knapp's plate discipline seems like a perfect fit behind the power-hitting Alfaro.
