It was a bittersweet turn of events for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. With under two minutes to play in the third period and locked in a 1-1 tie in Game 1 of the Atlantic Division Final round of the Calder Cup Playoffs, the Phantoms got a power play.
It came at a cost though.
Travis Sanheim was the victim of a knee-on-knee hit and helped off the ice in a scary scene. Sanheim obviously did not return and there was no immediate update on his status.
Six seconds into the late man-advantage, Greg Carey scored on a one-timer, helping the Phantoms secure a 1-0 series lead with a 2-1 win over the Charlotte Checkers at PPL Center on Friday night.
For much of the game, it was about goaltending.
The teams each had 10 shots in the opening period, but it was Alex Nedeljkovic who out-dueled Alex Lyon in the opening 20 minutes, making all 10 saves.
Lyon was solid, but couldn't keep Charlotte off the board.
Out of a scramble in front, the puck came loose and went right to the stick of Valentin Zykov, who beat Lyon with 4:34 remaining in the first to give Charlotte the lead.
The Phantoms managed to solve Nedeljkovic at 6:17 of the second period. Colin McDonald won a board battle behind the net allowing Cole Bardreau to get to the puck. Bardreau got the puck back in front to McDonald, who was stopped, but Alex Krushelnyski put home the rebound to tie the game.
The third period was a hard-fought battle between two teams that were generating good chances and looking for the edge on the scoreboard. The Phantoms let an early power-play chance get away, but were given another chance when Sanheim was tripped up by Zykov.
It took just six seconds for the Phantoms to strike. With 1:43 to play, the Phantoms made quick work of the power play with great passing.
Phil Myers got the puck at the point and dished to the far boards to Chris Conner. Conner passed below the goal line to Corban Knight who centered for Greg Carey for the one-timer. The goal was Carey's third of the playoffs and proved to be the game-winner.
Lyon was excellent in goal, stopping 29 shots in the win. Nedeljkovic was also very good, making 30 saves in a loss.
Game 2 is set for Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. from PPL Center.
