Report: Sixers, Jamal Crawford have mutual interest in deal

With Sixers rookie Zhaire Smith out for an indefinite amount of time due to a Jones fracture in his left foot, the Sixers will need to figure out ways to make the team better and add talent to fill in roster gaps.

According to Brandon 'Scoop B' Robinson of BBall Society, the Sixers and veteran guard Jamal Crawford apparently have mutual interest in striking a deal together.

Crawford, 38, is older than teams may want to put on their team, but he can still contribute. Crawford averaged 10.3 points, 2.3 assists, and 1.2 rebounds in 80 games last year for the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Sixers really are going to miss Zhaire Smith, whose injury from a workout Sunday night is the exact same suffered by Ben Simmons that kept him out for the entirety of the 2016-17 season.

With Crawford, he provides veteran leadership and quite a bit of basketball ability for this upcoming season, and provides more of a spark off the bench at the guard position than Jerryd Bayless would. Crawford is entering his 20th season in the NBA, and he shot 33.1 percent from beyond-the-arc last season.

If Zhaire Smith is indeed out for the upcoming season due to this injury or at least a significant amount of time, which many may perceive to be the case, Crawford would be an inexpensive option for the Sixers, given the chance he signs a contract for the veteran's minimum.

Crawford tweeted around 12 p.m. on Wednesday, "another day, another opportunity." So perhaps there is already something in the works.
