Phillies to Face Cy Young Award Favorite deGrom, Mets in Rubber Match

By Matt Rappa, Sports Talk Philly editor

Aiming for their first series win in over a month, the Philadelphia Phillies (74-67) and RHP Vince Velasquez will take on the MLB ERA leader — RHP Jacob deGrom — and the New York Mets (64-77) in Sunday's matinee rubber match finale at Citi Field.

UPDATE: deGrom has been scratched due to inclement weather. Right-hander Corey Oswalt will start in his place.

Despite outhitting the Mets 14-11, the Phillies fell 10-5 in Saturday's contest opposite RHP Noah Syndergaard. The right-hander yielded 12 hits and five walks to the Phillies offense through 6 2/3 innings, however Phillies starter Zach Eflin's struggled, allowing six runs on four hits and three walks through four frames. Over five starts since his demotion to Triple-A Lehigh Valley due to roster manipulation, Eflin has posted a 7.71 ERA and allowed 20 earned runs on 36 hits. 3B/1B Carlos Santana extended his MLB second-best hitting streak to 10 games, while left fielder Rhys Hoskins launched his 29th home run of the season. Second baseman Cesar Hernandez went 4-4. Collectively, the Phillies offense left 12 on base and went 5-12 with runners in scoring position.

With the National League East-leading Atlanta Braves winning on Saturday, the Phillies fell to 3 1/2 games back with 21 to play. After Sunday, the Phillies have three games left against the Nationals (home, Sept. 10-12), three against the Miami Marlins (home, Sept. 14-16), another three games against the Mets (home, Sept. 17-19), four away against the Braves (Sept. 20-23), four away against the Colorado Rockies (Sept. 24-27) and three home against the Braves (Sept. 28-30) to conclude the season. After their Sunday finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Braves still have to face the San Francisco Giants (3, away), Washington Nationals (3, home), St. Louis Cardinals (3, home), Phillies (4, home), Mets (3, away), and Phillies (3, home).
