Trailing both the National League East and National League Wild Card by five games with 20 games to go, the Philadelphia Phillies (74-68) will play a traditional, single-admission doubleheader on Tuesday opposite the Washington Nationals (71-72) at Citizens Bank Park. Phillies starters Nick Pivetta and Jake Arrieta will respectively oppose Nationals starters Erick Fedde and Tanner Roark. Arrieta is coming off of an outing on Sept. 4 in which he struck out a season-high 11 batters, as well as induced 18 swings and misses, his most since June and Sept. 2016, respectively.
The Phillies have split each of their three doubleheaders this season against the New York Mets (July 9, August 16) and San Diego Padres (July 22). Since their last postseason appearance, the Phillies have played four doubleheaders in a season just one other time (also 2011). They played in three doubleheaders in 2015 and 2017, two in 2012, one in 2013 and 2014, and none in 2016.
Prior to the game, the Phillies added right-handers Drew Anderson and Enyel De Los Santos, along with southpaw Ranger Suarez from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Thirty-nine of the 40 players are now active and available, with only injured left-hander Aaron Loup inactive.
Carlos Santana, who owns the longest active hitting streak in the National League (11 games), will make his fourth start of the season at third base in Game 1. Over his 11-game hitting streak, Santana is slashing .333/.372/.644 with seven runs scored, four home runs, nine RBI, three walks and five strikeouts spanning 45 at-bats.
