What’s Next? Around the NFC East: Week 1

By Matthew Kaplan, Sports Talk Philly Staff

With a week one victory over the Falcons under the Eagles belt, the 2018-2019 season is off to a good start. Even with an unsure immediate future of Carson Wentz and Alshon Jeffery, the Eagles are coming off an 18 to 12 victory with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers coming up on the schedule.

The Bucs were arguably the biggest surprise of week one. With out their starting quarterback, Jameis Winston, they managed to go in to New Orleans and go toe to toe with Drew Brees and the Saints pulling out the win 48 to 40. The biggest story coming from this game is Ryan Fitzpatrick, he went 21 for 28 with 417 yards and 4 touchdowns. That is with out mentioning he had 35 yards rushing and another touchdown with his feet. As it probably is not hard to tell their was not much defense played in this game. Neither team seemed to be able to stop the other. The other big story is both teams having the inability to get going on the ground. The Saints with out Mark Ingram only managed 43 total yards rushing. Mean while the Bucs needed a shock 35 yards from their quarterback to gain 112 yards on the ground.

As for the NFC East, the only other team in the division to pull out a victory was the Washington Redskins. The Redskins went to Arizona and took down the Cardinals 24 to 6. New QB Alex Smith looked extremely effective as he went 21 for 30 with 255 yards and 2 touchdowns. The 14 year veteran wasn’t the only one making him self comfortable as Adrian Peterson, taking on the team he played part of last season with, went for 96 yards and a touchdown. Not much good to talk about for the Cardinals as no body looked all that impressive and they were held scoreless until late in the 4th quarter. We can only wait and see on this Redskins team as they go home for week 2 to take on the Indianapolis Colts. It will be a tough task as the Colts have Andrew Luck back and it is only a matter of time until he gets his legs under him again.
