Lost in all the roster moves of Friday's deadline was the Eagles acquisition of Safety David Sims. Philadelphia will send a conditional 2013 draft pick to the Cleveland Browns in return for Sims. The Eagles waived G Julian Vandervelde to make room on the roster, and was claimed by Tampa Bay.
Sims, 25, is a secnd year player out of Iowa State university. In four preseason games he had 14 tackles and two interceptions, one which he returned for a Touchdown.
When Sims looked all but certain to make the Browns roster, Cleveland Plain Dealer writer Terry Pluto did a fantastic story on Sims' road to the NFL. The 25 year old was a highly touted recruit out of high school, before he needed knee surgery. After that, he didn't get one scholarship offer. Instead of walking on, he took a year off and went into Waste Management. He finally landed a spot on Iowa State's team, and finished his college career there. Even with the impressive numbers he put up while a member of the Cyclones, he went undrafted. He bounced around with the New York Giants and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before hitting the Browns practice squad midway through the 2011 season.
