Cliff Lee, Andy Pettitte Start As Phillies, Yankees Clash In Tampa

Roy Halladay was roughed up pretty bad in yesterday's 10-6 loss to Detroit. Halladay said after the game that his bad performance was not because of any soreness, but because he was feeling lethargic due to a new intense throwing program he has been doing. He topped out at 87 mph, 1 mph slower than his last start, and only threw 69 pitches. All in all, Halladay finished with this line: 2.2 IP, 6 H, 7 ER, 4 BB, 2 K, 2 HR. If this new throwing program is causing these kinds of results, I would advise Halladay to stop participating in it.

Cliff Lee will get the ball against the Yankees tonight as he makes his fourth start of the spring. In Lee's last start, a 3 2/3 innings outing against the Minnesota Twins, he was tagged for two runs (two home runs) on four hits. Lee walked one and struck out five. Despite his ERA reading 5.19, Lee has only allowed five earned runs over his past three starts. Lee has not faced the Yankees this spring.

Andy Pettitte will take the ball for the Yankees as he makes his appearance of the spring tonight. The 40-year-old Pettitte finished the 2012 season 5-4 with a 2.87 ERA for the Yankees. Despite fracturing his ankle in June, Pettitte returned in September for three starts. Pettitte last faced the Phillies in 2010, a few months after defeating them in the decisive Game 6 of the 2009 World Series.
