Jonathan Pettibone, Shelby Miller Open Up Series Between Phillies-Cardinals

The Phillies had high hopes headed into the All-Star Break. After finishing the first half at .500, the Phillies came out of the gates blazing against the Mets in their first game of the second half. Winning 13-8 on Friday was the only win the Phillies would see in that three-game set with New York. Now back under .500, where they have spent most of the season, the Phillies will open up a three-game set with the St. Louis Cardinals. In game one Jonathan Pettibone (5-3, 3.89 ERA) will take on Shelby Miller (9-2, 2.92 ERA) in an effort to strike first.

Jonathan Pettibone is headed into tonight's start with a 10-day rest. Back on July 13th, against the White Sox, the right hander held the opposition to three runs over seven innings. At home Pettibone is 3-1 with a 2.68 ERA, but on the road he has struggled – owning a 5.65 ERA in seven starts on the road. Pettibone has allowed three or more runs just three times in 16 starts this season. Tonight will be Pettibone's first career start against the Cardinals.

Shelby Miller is also coming off of a much-needed rest. It's been 13 days – nearly two weeks – since his last start and the rookie is looking to notch his 10th win of the year as he takes on the Phillies tonight. Back on July 10th the righthander took a no-decision after allowing three earned runs in five innings against Houston. At home, Miller is superb, owning a 5-2 record and a 1.93 ERA as well as holding the opposition to a .197 mark. This will be Miller's first time facing the Phillies.

Game Notes:

  • Both starters have not pitched in over 10 days, hopefully the rest will give them an advantage.
