Phillies Send Roberto Hernandez to the Mound To Kick Off Spring Training Against Toronto

It's finally here, folks.

Phillies spring training '14 has been in effect for two weeks now and today the Phillies will get their first Grapefruit League game in as they take on the Toronto Blue Jays at Bright House Field.

After yet another dismal season in 2013 (73-89), the Phillies look forward to improving their record and aiming themselves towards the postseason in their 132nd franchise season this year. With old faces gone and new faces arrived, the 2014 Phillies are ready to play baseball. They will get their practice for the regular season in today at 1:05 PM as they send out Roberto Hernandez (formerlyknown as Fausto Carmona – 2013: 6-13, 4.89 ERA) to the hill to take on former-Phil J.A. Happ (2013: 5-7, 4.56 ERA) in the spring training home opener.

Roberto Hernandez (Fausto Carmona) signed a one-year deal with the Phillies back in December after spending a year with the Tampa Bay Rays, where he went a disappointing 6-13 in 24 starts. After a controversy surrounding his name arose in 2012, Hernandez is looking to start fresh yet again with a new team in Philadelphia. Following Hernandez's start Jeff Manship, Antonio Bastardo, Brad Lincoln, Jake Diekman, Kevin Munson and Phillippe Aumont are scheduled to make appearances.

J.A. Happ is looking to get back on normal track after missing nearly three months of ball last season due to a head injury he suffered after being struck by a line-drive in the left side of his head in May. Going 5-7 in 18 starts, Happ is looking for his first +.500 record since 2010 when he went 6-4 with the Phils and Houston. Following Happ, Todd Redmond and fellow former-Phillies prospect Kyle Drabek are set to pitch.

Game Notes:

  • It's game one, but it's still spring training.
  • Stay healthy.
  • JA Happ has a career 14-5 as a Philadelphia Phillie (2007-2010).
