Last Wednesday, the Flyers announced that they had signed Kevin Goumas, a forward out of the University of New Hampshire, to an Amateur Try-Out for the remainder of the 2013-2014 season, and an AHL contract for next season. The 22-year-old Goumas scored team-leading points (52) and assists (33) in 40 games for the Wildcats during his senior year, and averaged a point-per-game pace with 146 points in as many games over the course of his collegiate career.
In two games with the Phantoms since his signing, Goumas has one point thanks to his first AHL goal scored in his second AHL game (he also scored a shootout goal that same night). Recently, he took some time to talk to Flyerdelphia about his experiences since being signed, his collegiate career, and his style of play.
Kim Pollock: How would you describe the last few days since the signing? Could you take me through what the experience has been like so far?
Kevin Goumas: The last few days have been an amazing experience. I was in college a week ago and now I'm here in Glenn Falls trying to pursue my dream with a great organization that has given me the opportunity to do so.
KP: What have you heard about playing in Philadelphia or for the Flyers organization?
KG: I haven’t heard too much about it, but from my experience of watching games on TV, whether it’s playoffs or not, the atmosphere seems to be incredible. As for playing for the organization itself, I’ve heard great things. I’ve heard that they help develop you into the best possible player you can be, along with giving you every opportunity to play in the NHL.
KP: You scored your first career AHL goal (and another in the shootout) in your second game with the Phantoms. What was that like?
KG: It was probably one of the best feelings I’ve had in a while. As a kid, you always dream to do that one day, so it was pretty special. It just felt nice to get that off my shoulders so quickly because my first college goal took me about six months, and the longer it took, the more I was fighting it. But I also have to give credit to the four other guys out there at the time, because it was a great all-around play, especially the pass by Ben Holmstrom who found me on the back door. As far as the shootout, I was a little shocked that the coach picked me to go. I tried not to overthink it and just focused on going down and doing whatever the goalie gave me, whether it was a deke or a shot.
KP: Are you at all concerned about your size [5'10] being an issue in the NHL?
KG: That’s something I can’t control. All I can do is go out there every day and work hard and I think that if I can do that, everything will take care of itself. Hopefully some of my other characteristics can make up for it.
KP: What do you believe is the best part of your game?
KG: My speed and playmaking ability. Being that I’m not that big, I have to be able to use my feet well.
KP: Who in the NHL did you idolize when you were younger? Were you a fan of any Flyers while you were growing up?
KG: Considering I’m from New York, I can’t say I was a Flyers fan growing up, and my two favorite players happened to be on New York teams: Mark Messier and Mike Peca.
KP: What was the most memorable game of your college career?
KG: Probably playing outdoors at Fenway Park against our rival Maine in front of 38,000+ fans.
KP: What kind of an impact do you want to make now that you're with the Flyers organization?
KG: Well, like every other player, I’m sure, I want to help win championships, whether it's with the Flyers or the Phantoms.
KP: What do you want fans to know about you and your style of play?
KG: Like I stated before, I’m just going to work hard everyday and play my game of speed and making plays.
