This Week in Eagles History: September 24

On this Wednesday afternoon, the Eagles are preparing to face the San Francisco 49ers in Week 4 of the 2014 season and going for a 4-0 start to the season.

In 2006, the Eagles were playing the 49ers in Week 3. In one of their more recent trips to San Francisco, the Eagles used a strong first-half performance to grab a 38-24 win over the 49ers that afternoon.

Led by Brian Westbrook, who had a four-yard receiving touchdown in the first and a 71-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, the Eagles pulled out to a 24-3 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, Mike Patterson ran back a fumble 98 yards for a touchdown in one of the more memorable plays of the season. Westbrook added his second touchdown run of the afternoon in the fourth quarter as the Eagles cruised to a victory to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Donovan McNabb was 18-for-33 passing for 296 yards. Westbrook ran for 117 yards on eight carries. Reggie Brown had five catches for a game-high 106 receiving yards.

Alex Smith was 27-for-46 for the 49ers, passing for 293 yards. Frank Gore rushed for 52 yards on 16 carries.

The Eagles would go on to start the 2006 season with a 4-1 record before losing five of their next six games. They closed the season on a five-game winning streak that propelled them into the playoffs where they also won a sixth straight game in the Wildcard round against the New York Giants.

They lost in the Division round to the New Orleans Saints, 27-24, ending their season.
