Monday Six Pack: Eagles vs. Panthers

It's been an extended week filled with various storylines, several over the injuries the Eagles are facing heading into Monday night's game against the Panthers.

The NFC South have been an anemic division this season, with no team really showing any assertiveness to win. That said, the Panthers are the reigning division champs, so anything is possible from this group.

Here are tonight's six keys to the game.

Starting quarterback Mark Sanchez – This is the first game the Eagles will knowingly start Mark Sanchez at quarterback, and it will be the first of many. Sanchez filled in admirably last week, but did throw two interceptions. The backup quarterback will have to limit mistakes against a defense that is trying to return to the dominant form it held a season ago.

Jordan Matthews – One thing you will learn about Sanchez is how much he loves targeting the rookie wide receiver. Matthews has shown signs of being a star in this league, but it is a small sample size obviously. The second half of the season could be huge for Matthews with Sanchez delivering the passes.

Versatility from Cam Newton – It's been a rough season for the Panthers quarterback but Newton knows how to win. He's proven it in the Panthers NFC South championship season last year. Newton possesses great versatility in the way he can beat you. He's known more for his running ability than his passing skills, but like many in his class, this is a young quarterback that can shine with the brightest.

LeSean McCoy vs. Panthers rush defense – The Panthers rank 27th in yards per game allowed on the ground. That could mean big things from LeSean McCoy and the rest of the Eagles running backs. In some cases, with Sanchez in the pocket, putting the ball in McCoy's hands may be the safest move. Don't be surprised if the Eagles try to set the tone on the ground before anything else.

Panthers wide receivers vs. Eagles secondary – There are two names you have to pay attention to tonight for the Panthers offense: Kelvin Benjamin and Greg Olson. In what has been a down year for the Panthers, both receivers have five touchdowns. Given the way the Eagles secondary has a tendency to play, keeping both in check will be a difficult task. There aren't many areas where the Eagles look inferior to the Panthers, but this certainly is one matchup that looks daunting.

First Place on the Line – The Panthers enter Monday night's game on a three-game losing streak. Despite that, the 3-5-1 Panthers still have a chance to win the NFC South. They received a gift in their hopes for another division title on Sunday when the Saints coughed up a chance to win with a fumble in overtime. First place is on the line for both teams, as the Eagles need a win to stay a half-game up on the Cowboys.
