Maikel Franco delivers 5 RBI for second day in a row as Phillies down Yankees

Final: Phillies  , Yankees

WP: Ken Giles (3-1, 1.69 ERA) LP: Dellin Betances (4-1,1.25 ERA)

Bronx, New York City – The Phillies had the Yankees number in the first game of the series Monday night.  Could they do it again?

After a rain delay that kept the game from starting until 8:25 p.m., the Phillies and Yankees bats continued to shower home runs.  One of them came from the bat of Maikel Franco, who remained incredibly hot.

Sean O'Sullivan started for the Phillies and was tagged for six earned runs.  Four of them came on home runs.

The Yankees scored a run in each of the first two innings, before the Phillies followed with one of their own in the top of the third.  After the Yankees scored their third run, the Phillies offense lit back up.  The Phillies scored five runs in the fourth inning.

The fourth inning offense included two home runs from the Phillies offense.  The first came on a Cameron Rupp solo shot into the Phillies bullpen.  The home run was the first of his Major League career.  After Ben Revere and Cesar Hernandez reached with hits, Maikel Franco belted a ball into the right field stands to make the score 6-3 Phillies.

Phillies starter O'Sullivan was able to shut down the Yankees in the fourth, but got hit hard in the fifth.  Chase Headley and Alex Rodriguez hit back-to-back home runs and Carlos Beltran followed with a double.  That was enough to remove O'Sullivan from the game.  Elvis Araujo allowed a double to Garrett Jones, which scored Beltran and tied the score at 6.

Franco became the target of Yankees reliever Justin Wilson.  Franco was not showboating even a little bit, but Wilson drilled him in the hip.  Thankfully, Franco was not hurt by the pitch, which was clearly thrown intentionally.

In the ninth inning Cesar Hernandez was hit too but the timing was good.  Ben Revere opened the ninth inning with a double by Dellin Betances, and while Hernandez tried to move Revere along to third base, Hernandez was hit by a pitch instead, bringing Maikel Franco to the plate.

Franco lined a double down the third base line to score both Revere and Hernandez, to give the Phillies an 8-6 lead.  But they would not stop there.  Franco was joined on base by Jeff Francoeur, also hit by a pitch, and Domonic Brown, who walked.

Andres Blanco cleared the bases with a triple to put the Phillies up 11-6.

The overworked bullpen hopefully get a rest tomorrow afternoon, as the Phillies turn to their ace (for now) Cole Hamels.
