Phillies sign veteran starter Kevin Correia to Major League contract

After Severino Gonzalez's latest start in which he lasted just 2 2/3 innings and gave up six runs on seven hits, the Phillies have added a veteran pitcher to their staff in 34-year-old right-hander, Kevin Coerreia.

While the Phillies haven't announced what role Correia will have the club just yet, it seems likely that he will be added into a rotation that currently includes ace Cole Hamels, veteran journeyman Aaron Harang and back-end starters Sean O'Sullivan and Jerome Williams.

At the end of March, Correia was released by Seattle. Shortly afterwards, he signed with the Giants and was granted free agency on May 30th. In six starts at the Triple-A level this season, he posted an 0-1 record to go along with a 3.58 ERA.

Drafted in the fourth round of the 2004 draft by San Francisco, Correia holds a lifetime 76-95 record and a 4.59 ERA. Last season, between the Twins and Dodgers, he went 7-17 with a 5.44 ERA in 32 games, 26 of which were starts.

According to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com, Correia will earn $650,000 and can earn $400,000 more in games-started incentives and awards.
