Carlos Ruiz drives in two during 1,000th career game as Phillies best Braves

Braves starter Shelby Miller came into tonight's game in Philadelphia with a 0.84 ERA against the Phillies this season over three starts. Carlos Ruiz, playing in his 1,000th career game, gave the Phils the lead in the fourth and the bullpen hurled zero's for the final four frames, sealing the 4-1 win. In his first start since July 1st, Aaron Harang pitched well, tossing five innings of one-run ball, snapping a personal eight-game losing streak. The teams combined for 24 hits with Braves left-fielder Adonis Garcia as the only hitless batter. The Phillies are now 10-2 since the All-Star Break, tied with the Giants for the best record in that span.

The Braves got the game's first run in the third, loading the bases with no outs. Harang, facing an uphill battle, got Freddie Freeman swinging and Adonis Garcia on a force out before surrendering an infield RBI-single to A.J. Pierzynski. Harang stranded the bases full, ending Atlanta's threat down just 1-0.

The Phillies jumped ahead in the fourth. Odubel Herrera, Freddy Galvis and Domonic Brown hit one-out singles, bringing Carlos Ruiz to the dish. Chooch smacked a two-run single to left center, scoring Herrera and Galvis to give the Phils a 2-1 lead.

The Phillies took a two run lead in the fifth courtesy of a Ryan Howard RBI-single to plate Cesar Hernandez. Domonic Brown hit his first home run, a solo blast to right, in the sixth to extend the Phils advantage to 4-1.

After Harang departed the game at the end of the fifth, Elvis Araujo, Jeanmar Gomez, Luis Garcia and Ken Giles combined to throw four scoreless innings, holding the Braves offense in check. Giles earned his second save, but he allowed two singles to start the ninth before inducing a groundout and striking out Freddie Freeman and Adonis Garcia. The Phillies closer hit 101 and 100 multiple times during the ninth.
