The previous weekend was rough for the Phantoms. Three-in-three weekends are common in the AHL. This was not a memorable one for Lehigh Valley, as they dropped all three games to Hershey, Syracuse and the Binghamton Senators, the team they were facing again on Wednesday night.
This time, the Phantoms got the result they were looking for, snapping a three-game losing streak on their way to a 6-3 win at Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena.
After one period, the shots were 16-11 Binghamton. But the Phantoms held the edge where it counts, 3-2.
The Senators controlled the early, striking for two goals in 38 seconds.
Cole Schneider and Colin Greening each netted goals just 4:27 into the game.
It didn't take long for the Phantoms to strike back. Just 15 seconds later, Tim Brent scored his fourth goal of the season from Taylor Leier and Andrew MacDonald.
Shayne Gostisbehere scored the game-tying goal just 48 seconds after that on the power play. Brent and Chris Conner picked up assists.
The Phantoms capped the scoring in the first with the go-ahead goal at 16:22, as Tyrell Goulbourne scored his fourth goal of the season from newcomers Kevin Sundher and Evan Rankin.
From there, the Phantoms never looked back. Nick Cousins scored his fourth goal of the season at 3:27.
Max McCormick cut the lead to one just 41 seconds later, but the period remained scoreless after that until the closing seconds, when Kevin Goumas scored his second goal of the season with just two seconds to go.
Anthony Stolarz may have allowed the two early goals, but recovered to make 30 saves on 33 Binghamton shots.
The lone goal of the third was Petr Straka's seventh of the season into an empty net at 18:29.
Rankin finished the night with three assists. Conner had two assists. Brent and Cousins each had a goal and an assist. 12 different Phantoms recorded at least one point in the win.
The Phantoms return to action on Friday when they host the Rochester Americans at PPL Center. The opening faceoff is set for 7:05 p.m.
