The Tuesday Tank Report
Eagles hire Frank Reich as offensive coordinator

Eagles hire John DeFilippo as QB coach, retain Duce Staley as RB coach

During his introductory press conference on Tuesday, Doug Pederson made several announcements regarding his coaching staff.

He announced the hiring of Jim Schwartz as defensive coordinator. He added that offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland and special teams coordinator Dave Fipp will be retained in their current positions.

The rest was up for evaluation.

As of late Tuesday night, two more members of the coaching staff were known.

According to Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports, the Eagles have hired John DeFilippo as quarterback coach. While Pederson had no update as of his press conference, he told Derrick Gunn live on CSN Philly that the Eagles will be retaining  as running back coach.

DeFilippo was the offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns in 2015 after serving as their quarterback coach from 2012 to 2014. DeFilippo was also quarterback coach for the New York Jets in 2009 and the Oakland Raiders in 2007 and 2008.

DeFilippo has ties to the Philadelphia area. In 1993, his father Gene DeFilippo was hired as athletic director at Villanova and John attended Radnor High School, where he played quarterback for three seasons.

Staley, a long-time Eagles running back, joined the team in 2011 as a quality coach, the same year Pederson became the quarterback coach. He moved to running backs coach in 2013 with the hiring of Chip Kelly.

Staley was also one of the internal candidates for the head coaching job, being the Eagles first confirmed interview.

The hiring of DeFilippo also all but ends Pat Shurmur's tenure with the Eagles. After being considered for the head coaching job that went to Pederson, there was some thought the Eagles would try to keep Shurmur as offensive coordinator or even quarterback coach.

The offensive coordinator position has not been filled, but the Eagles seem to be leaning toward hiring Frank Reich over Shurmur at this point.
