Report: Eagles have ‘turned attention’ to Tom Coughlin

Officially, the Eagles have four candidates from their list of interviews that are available for hire. And at this point, everyone is fair game.

After reportedly losing out on Ben McAdoo, the New York Giants offensive coordinator now turned head coach, the Eagles have set their sights on another Giant.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Eagles are now "turning their attention" to Tom Coughlin and the possibility of hiring him.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network adds that talks have intensified of late and that something could happen quickly. He adds that Coughlin has "wrapped his head around" the possibility of coaching the Eagles, which indicates this is just a matter of working out a deal. Rapoport added in a later tweet that the Eagles are set for a face-to-face meeting with Coughlin today.

Coughlin, who will turn 70 in August prior to the start of the 2016 season, is said to want to continue coaching and believes he still has two or three more years in him.

The issue there is that Coughlin's goal would be to essentially win now, something that would appear to be a difficult task given the Eagles current state.

Nothing is imminent on the Eagles coaching front, at least not with Coughlin. Schefter adds that both sides have some issues to work through, but, for now, that's where the Eagles have placed their focus.

Despite that, as Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports said yesterday, it wouldn't be a surprise for the Eagles and Giants to have coaches within 24-48 hours of Hue Jackson taking a position in Cleveland. The Giants are already in the process of finalizing a deal with McAdoo, which may mean the Eagles are trying to follow suit with Coughlin.

The remaining candidates in addition to Coughlin are current interim head coach Pat Shurmur, running back coach Duce Staley and Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson. Of the four, the Eagles could not officially hire Pederson until the Chiefs were eliminated from the playoffs, which could still happen as soon as Saturday.
