Ray Emery signs contract with Flyers

With the Flyers dealing with injuries in net, they have reached out to a former netminder for assistance.

Ray Emery re-joined the Flyers on a try-out basis on Wednesday and has now signed a contract to spend the rest of the season with the Flyers.

Emery has to clear waivers before he can officially sign and will remain third on the team's depth chart behind Steve Mason and Anthony Stolarz. Because his signing comes after the trade deadline, Emery is not eligible for the playoffs.

Emery has spent time with the Flyers two previous times. He signed on for the 2009-10 season, going 16-11-1 with a 2.64 GAA and .905 save percentage.

He was also a Flyer during each of the last two seasons. In 2013-14, he made 21 starts and posted a 9-12-2 record with a 2.96 GAA and .903 save percentage. Last season, in 25 starts and 31 appearances, Emery was 10-11-7 with a 3.06 GAA and .894 save percentage.

Recently, the Flyers have leaned heavily on Mason, who is 20-17-9 with a 2.52 GAA and .918 save percentage this season. The backup for the last six games has been Stolarz, the Flyers top goaltending prospect who has yet to make his NHL debut.

Michal Neuvirth is out for the remainder of the regular season with a lower-body injury.

GM Ron Hextall commented on the try-out for Emery, saying that it provides security to the goaltending position during the stretch run.

Stolarz remains the backup during the stretch run, but Emery will also remain with the Flyers in practice. Veteran goaltender Jason LaBarbera, who is on the Phantoms roster, recently suffered an injury as well that will keep him out for a while, which leaves the Flyers with minimal options after Stolarz should anything else happen.

Emery has bounced around this season, playing on try-out contracts in the AHL with Syracuse, Ontario and Toronto before joining a German league team in February.

The Flyers host the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night at 8 p.m.
