BREAKING: Phillies select HS OF Mickey Moniak with 1st overall pick in 2016 MLB Draft

With the 1st overall selection in the 2016 MLB Entry Draft, the Phillies selected La Costa Canyon high school outfielder Mickey Moniak

The California outfielder means the Phillies will have drafted a high school hitter in the first round for three of the last four drafts.

The Phillies could have gone in a variety of directions with their top selection, but opted for a 'five-tool' type player to potentially highlight their outfield years from now.

As of now, Moniak is committed to UCLA to play college baseball. Whether or not he ends up suiting up for the Bruins is up to the Phillies and Moniak's representation.

Philliedelphia.com will have extensive further coverage of Moniak and all of the Phillies selections in the 2016 MLB Draft.
