Phillies pull out extra-inning win, sweep D-backs

By: Rebecca Serad, Staff Writer

Final: Philadelphia Phillies 9, Arizona Diamondbacks 8  ❖  Attendance: 18,603

Phoenix, AZ — The game went ten innings and was almost four hours long. There were twelve relief pitchers used between both teams and a combined seventeen runs scored. Luckily, the Philadelphia Phillies (35-45) came out on the winning end of a grueling match-up versus the Arizona Diamondbacks (36-45). With today's win, the Phils completed a three game sweep of the D-backs. It also happens to be the first sweep of the D-backs in their home park since 2006.

The Phillies offense came to life during this series in Arizona. Over the course of the three games, they accumulated 44 hits and 21 runs. However, it was the complete opposite of when the Diamondbacks game to Philly a little over a week ago. During that four game series at home, the Phillies only had 20 hits and 5 runs. Maybe a change of scenery helped spark the Phils' struggling offense, maybe not. Whatever the case, the team needs to carry it back to Citizens Bank Park when the reigning World Series champion Kansas City Royals come to town this weekend.

The Phillies got off to a good start, with Odubel Herrera leading off the game with a walk.  The hot hitting Peter Bourjos followed with a two-run shot to right field to give the the team an early lead. However, the next three Phillies were retired in order and couldn't add on any more runs in the inning.

The Diamondbacks came back fighting in the bottom half of the inning. Phil Gosselin doubled to right field. The next play had a big impact on the inning. Paul Goldschmidt hit a ball hard down the third base line, which was stopped by Maikel Franco. On the receiving end, it appeared that first baseman Tommy Joseph tagged Goldschimdt out. However, the D-backs had the call reviewed and it was ultimately overturned, putting runners on first and second. Franco was given an error on the play. Jake Lamb then stepped to the plate and proceded to slug a three run homer to center field, giving the Diamondbacks a 3-2 lead. Phillies starter Zach Eflin was able to retire the next two batters to get out of the inning.

The D-backs continued to add on in the second. Brandon Drury singled to lead off the inning. One out later, former Phillie Michael Bourn hit a ground-rule double to left field.  This put runners on second and third for Jean Segura. He followed with a sac fly to center field to pad the Diamondbacks' lead. Eflin got the final out to end the threat.

In the top of the fifth, Eflin got his first major league hit: a double to left-center field. Herrera grounded out, but moved Eflin up to third base. Bourjos also grounded out, and Eflin was unable to score on the play. This brought Cody Asche to the plate with two outs. He smacked a line drive down the first base for a double, scoring Eflin. Unfortunately, the Phillies weren't able to capitalize on the runner in scoring position.

Jimmy Paredes, pinch-hitting for Eflin, led off the top of the seventh with a single. He was moved up to second on a ground-out by Herrera and then to third on a ground-out by Bourjos. Asche followed with a single to right field to score Paredes, tying the game.

The tie didn't last for long. Severino Gonzalez entered the game in relief of Eflin and immediately allowed the first two hitters to get on base. He was removed in favor of Edubray Ramos. He retired the first batter he faced, but then Gosselin singled to right field to score a run. Runners were on first and third for Goldschmidt. He hit a double into the right-center field gap, clearing the bases. Ramos was then taken out of the game and Adam Morgan made his relief pitching debut. Morgan got the final two outs to avoid any further damage.

The Phillies fought back in the eighth inning. Cameron Rupp hit a one out single and Freddy Galvis followed with his third hit of the day to put runners on first and second for second baseman Cesar Hernandez. He hit a cue shot to third base and beat out the throw at first to load the bases. Andres Blanco, who had just entered the game in a double switch, hit a bloop single to right field, scoring both Rupp and Galvis and allowing Hernandez to go to third on the play. After a pitching change, Herrera came to the plate. He hit a ball that went off the glove of D-backs third baseman Lamb and it allowed Hernandez to score and tie the game once again. After another pitching change, Bourjos was walked and Asche was once again brought to the plate in a key situation. He hit a sac fly to center field to give the Phillies the lead. Tommy Joseph ended up being both the first and last outs of the inning.

In the bottom of the inning, the Diamondbacks took advantage of the runner they had on base with two outs. Nick Ahmed got an infield single, stole second base and then went to third on a wild pitch. He scored on an infield single by Jean Segura. Segura ended up advancing to second on a throwing error by Blanco. After hitting a batter and putting runners on first and second, reliever Hector Neris was removed in favor of closer Jeanmar Gomez. Gomez only needed one pitch to get out of the jam.

The Phillies had a spark of offense in the top of the tenth inning, starting with a one out infield single by Bourjos. Asche followed with a single to right field and Bourjos was able to advance to third. Tyler Goeddel came in to pinch-hit for Gomez and hit a sac fly to give the Phils a lead that would stick.
