Phil Klein spot starts for DL bound Nola vs. Giants

 Starting Pitching Matchup:

San Francisco Giants (61-45) Philadelphia Phillies (49-59)
RHP Johnny Cueto RHP Phil Klein
(13-3, 2.63 ERA) (0-1, 5.19 ERA)

I know what you're thinking. Who the hell is Phil Klein? Let's figure it out together shall we? Back in June, Klein was claimed off waivers from Texas. He was selected in the 30th round of the 2011 MLB Draft and made his first big league start last season against the Red Sox where he went 5.1 innings and picked up a win. He made a few appearances out of the Rangers bullpen this season before being waived.

Since Klein has been with the Phillies organization, he has been a swing man at Triple-A Lehigh Valley and has a 2.13 ERA which includes four starts. He was scheduled to start tonight for the IronPigs which is why he is up here and not Jake Thompson, who pitched on Sunday. One would assume we'll see Thompson the next time around. Makes things interesting to say the least.

Not in Klein's favor is his opponent, Johnny Cueto.  The NL Cy Young contender has had a fantastic season in San Francisco but the Phils did touch him up a bit back in June for six runs in six inning. Cueto is coming off another mediocre outing against Washington last week but as we've seen this season, those outings are few and far between.

Aaron Altherr returns to second in the lineup tonight after a fantastic five RBI night at the plate last night. Ryan Howard bats cleanup tonight and Cody Asche and Odubel Herrera return to the lineup as well.
