Phillies lose Brett Oberholtzer to the Angels

Brett Oberholtzer has a new team (Frank Klose/Philliedelphia)

When the Phillies designated for assignment the contract of Brett Oberholtzer, there was still an outside chance he could remain in the organization.   Should Oberholtzer have gone unclaimed on waivers, the Phillies could keep him in the system.  But alas, Oberholtzer has been claimed.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announced today that they have been awarded a claim of Oberholtzer's contract.

Our buddy Fr. Ed Casey predicted not just the Oberholtzer claim, but the other part of the Angels situation:

The Angels designated for assignment Lincecum's contract.  Lincecum went unclaimed and accepted an assignment to the minors.

Oberholtzer, had he had cleared waivers, may have factored into the Phillies plans again down the line.  But, the team feels that they have many more options well ahead of Oberholtzer in the organization already.  The 40-man spot cleared by Oberholtzer will likely be put to good use in the form of a September call-up.
