Former Sixer Hollis Thompson to join Spurs D-League affiliate

The Philadelphia 76ers parted ways with one of their longest-tenured players earlier this month, waiving guard Hollis Thompson and avoiding the guaranteed salary deadline. The 25-year-old out of Georgetown was in the final year of a four-year contract and his salary for the season would have become fully guaranteed on January 10. After a few weeks on the market, Thompson looks to be joining the D-League affiliate of the Spurs in Austin, Texas.

He'll remain an NBA free agent even after being claimed in the D-League, so the Spurs don't hold the rights to Thompson.

Thompson signed with the Sixers in September 2013 and was a member of the Sixers on the first game of Sam Hinkie's rebuilding process that October. After playing nearly 28 minutes per game last season though, Thompson was averaging just over 18 minutes in 31 games this season, despite adding a three-point threat to the game. His 38.931 percent shooting percentage from beyond the arc is good for sixth in Philadelphia 76ers history. Thompson finished his Sixers career with averages of 7.9 points and 3.1 rebounds across 256 games.
