Charlie Manuel once thought Ender Inciarte was a club employee, not a player

By Tim Kelly, Sports Talk Philly editor

Ender Inciarte's tenure with the Philadelphia Phillies isn't one that Phillies fans are quick to talk about. The club selected him in the 2012 Rule-5 Draft from the Arizona Diamondbacks. Inciarte then made the team out of Spring Training, but was designated for assignment after suiting up for just one game with the team and ultimately returned to Arizona.

Inciarte was recently interviewed by Dan Lumpkin of MLB Trade Rumors, and shared an interesting anecdote about an interaction with then-Phillies manager Charlie Manuel during his brief time with the club:

Flyers-Hurricanes: Postgame Points

By Kevin Durso, Sports Talk Philly editor

Even with a four-day break, there was some excitement and enjoyment in the air with Wayne Simmonds MVP performance at the All-Star Game.

All of the good vibes of Simmonds’ All-Star heroics and a three-game winning streak entering the break vanished quickly in what is quite possibly the Flyers ugliest performance of the season.

The Carolina Hurricanes, like any team in the East certainly not out of the picture yet, were a motivated bunch riding a five-game losing streak and it showed in their 5-1 romp over the Flyers.

Here are 10 Postgame Points from Flyers-Hurricanes.

Category 20: Aho hat trick sinks Flyers

By: Bill Minchin/Sports Talk Philly writer

Sebastian Aho had the game of his life. The Hurricanes youngster netted his first career hat trick, Jeff Skinner added his 18th of the season and Cam Ward stopped 15 shots to defeat the Philadelphia Flyers 5-1 on Tuesday night in Carolina.

Carolina jumped on the Flyers early in the first period. They were faster, stronger and hungrier. It paid off for the Hurricanes at 7:11.

Former Phillies OF Domonic Brown Gets a Chance in Rockies Organization

When the Phillies and Toronto Blue Jays were engaged in trade talks in 2009 and 2010, the Blue Jays reportedly wanted two players pretty badly: pitcher J.A. Happ and outfielder Domonic Brown.   Last offseason, the Blue Jays signed both former Phillies, who had very different results.   On the mound, Happ went 20-4 and helped lead the Blue Jays into the playoffs.  But Brown, who signed a minor league deal, never managed to get out of Triple-A Buffalo.  Brown will get another chance with another organization in 2017.

According to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports, Brown has signed a minor league deal with the Colorado Rockies:

The Rockies are very deep in the outfield at the Major League level.

The Rockies employ starters Charlie Blackmon, Carlos Gonzalez, and Gerardo Parra, and that does not even include rising star David Dahl, who may claim one of those outfield spots.  Therefore, the Rockies would likely have to be down two outfielders before Brown would get a shot.  However, he would have to prove he belongs in the Major Leagues.

Brown played in 126 games for the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons in 2016, making 464 at bats.   Brown hit just seven home runs and drove in 38 runs, batting .239 along the way with a .639 OPS.  Even injuries at the Major League level to the Blue Jays were not enough to warrant a promotion for Brown.

In 493 games with the Phillies, Brown batted .246 with 54 home runs and 229 runs batted in in 1691 at bats from 2011 through 2015.

Green-Beckham, Treggs reportedly focused more on partying than improving as players

By Tim Kelly, Sports Talk Philly editor

In an ideal world, professional athletes would spend 16 hours a day honing their craft -- practicing, lifting, working with the trainers, watching film, etc. -- and spend the other eight hours sleeping. In reality, players have 24 hours in the day, and many struggle to balance the amount of hours they should spend becoming better players and the amount they should spend enjoying their likely short-lived fame.

According to Geoff Mosher of 4 Philly Sports, during the 2016 season two of the Philadelphia Eagles youngest receivers struggled to find a good balance between enjoying being a celebrity and trying to become better at the thing that actually made them a celebrity:

The hometown Atlantic Division dominated the Round-Robin, but couldn't unseat the defending champions of the AHL All-Star Classic in the Final.

A 1-0 shootout win for the Central Division clinched them a second-straight win at the All-Star Classic in front of another sell-out crowd at PPL Center.

All three Lehigh Valley Phantoms representatives shined during the event, with Taylor Leier picking up three goals and MVP honors, and T.J. Brennan and Jordan Weal picking up a goal and an assist each in four games.

Sixers overcome monster game from Boogie, dethrone Kings

The Philadelphia 76ers (18-29) used a 42-point third quarter to stage an impressive comeback and beat the Sacramento Kings (19-29) tonight at Wells Fargo Center, 122-119. DeMarcus Cousins fouled out in the final minutes and the Sixers held off the Kings to snap their brief two-game skid. Philadelphia looked stale, falling behind big early, but they bounced back and shot 70.8 percent from the floor in the third and scored 74 total points in the second half, their highest scoring half since February 7, 1994, per Brian Seltzer. Sacramento had a chance to tie at the buzzer, but Arron Affalo's open three was short.

With the win, the Sixers finish January at 10-5 , with seven of those wins coming at home. They shot 54.2 percent from the floor tonight, went 21-for-26 from the line, had 13 steals and scored 27 points off 21 Kings turnovers. Despite Cousins' dominant night, Philadelphia won the battle in the paint, 52-46. The Sixers reserves rebounded from a rough game against Chicago on Sunday to score 49 points tonight.
