The Philadelphia Flyers could not match history as the Los Angeles Kings sent them back to reality with a 4-1 loss.

The Philadelphia Flyers fell just short of matching history tonight as they fell to the Los Angeles Kings, 4-1.
The Kings jumped out to a 2-0 lead after Shayne Gostisbehere missed on his pass and the puck was collected by Jake Muzzin. Muzzin was able to find Nick Shore, who then fed Trevor Lewis for left circle shot that beat Elliott over his glove.
Los Angeles was able to put the game away in the third period with two more goals.
The first of which came as the Flyers fourth power play expired. After some crucial stops by goaltender Jonathan Quick, Dustin Brown rushed the puck up ice, he was met in the neutral zone by Adrian Kempe, who had just departed from the penalty box. Brown dropped a pass for Kempe at the left circle and Kempe's shot seemed to confuse Flyers goalie Brian Elliott. Elliott looked like he was anticipating a pass or deflection and was caught cheating as Kempe's shot passed him to make it 3-1.
Tyler Toffoli made sure there would be no question to the outcome as he was fed by Shore, after picking Sean Couturier's pocket in the neutral zone, which put him behind the Flyers defense. Toffoli then roofed the puck over Elliott's glove to put the game away.
Jake Voracek was able to cut the lead in half before the end of the first period on the Flyers second power play. Claude Giroux took a shot from above the circle that deflected off of Drew Doughty's shin and bounced directly to Voracek. Voracek's speedy snap shot beat a sprawling Quick to narrow the Kings lead to 2-1.
After that, the Kings were able to force the Flyers to the parameter and allow their elite level goaltender take care of whatever they couldn't block.
Alec Martinez opened the scoring after Torrey Mitchell won the draw in the Flyers zone. Mitchell beat Scott Laughton cleanly at the right circle and won it right to Martinez. The Kings defenseman was able to wind up into a slap shot and beat Elliott over his shoulder.
Martinez blocked a crucial shot from Giroux on the power play. Quick would not have been able to make it across the crease to stop the puck. However, Martinez prevented the puck from ever reaching the goal which kept the Kings up 2-1.
Elliott bounced back a few seconds later to keep the game within reach. Martinez took a shot from the left point but the puck hit a scrum in front of the Flyers goal. Andrew Andreoff collected the puck for a quick shot to Elliott's right, but the Flyers goaltender was able to recover and stack the pads in time to keep the puck out.
He also robbed Marian Gaborik from the slot in the second period. The Kings top line of Brown, Gaborik and Anze Kopitar performed some quick passing on an odd-man rush after the Flyers forwards were caught flat-footed. Kopitar fed Brown who found Kopitar and then the Slovakian sniper cut to the slot and let a quick wrist shot go. The only thing that kept the puck out of the top left corner was the lightning-fast glove hand of Elliott.
Ultimately, the Flyers could not match the Kings superior transitional play, a hallmark of John Stevens' coaching style as Flyers fans will remember, their size, stifling defense and the great goaltending of Quick.
A win for the Flyers would have matched the longest winning streak following a ten-game winless skid set by the 1966-67 Toronto Maple Leafs.
Instead, the Flyers will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday as they host the Detroit Red Wings. The game will be broadcast on NBC Sports Network as a part of the network's "Wednesday Night Rivalry" lineup. Therefore, it is set for an 8 p.m. start.
