Phillies tab Velasquez looking to clinch series win vs. Marlins

By Tim Kelly, Sports Talk Philly editor

Sunday afternoon, Jake Arrieta will make his Philadelphia Phillies debut against the Miami Marlins. Saturday evening, however, Vince Velasquez will start against the Fish, with time perhaps running out on his tenure in the Phillies starting rotation.

After a disappointing 2017 season, Velasquez didn't have an ideal start to his third season with the Phillies. The 25-year-old righty lasted just 2.2 against the Atlanta Braves last Saturday, allowing seven runs (four of which were earned) in what turned out to be a 15-2 clobbering.

Nontheless, Velasquez will start against LHP Dillon Peters as the Phillies will look to clinch Gabe Kapler's first series win. He'll do so with Nick Williams, who voiced his frustrations with his lack of playing time Thursday, on the bench again. A struggling J.P. Crawford will join him, as Scott Kingery and Maikel Franco will make up the left side of the infield that the Phillies hope will lead to their first winning streak of the 2018 season.

  • Vince Velasquez has made 37 non-injury shortened starts with the Phillies. He's lasted seven or more innings in just five of those starts.
  • After hitting just .209 against left-handed pitchers in 2017, Maikel Franco had a home run and four RBIs Thursday against Caleb Smith and Jarlin Garcia, two lefties. He'll face another lefty Saturday night in Peters.
  • Despite Scott Kingery's natural position being second base, Cesar Hernandez will lead off and play second base for the seventh time in as many games. Kingery will start at shortstop for the second time this season.
