On This Day: Thome hits 400th career home run, Rollins becomes Phillies all-time hits leader

Perhaps two of the most important players in the Citizens Bank Park era of Philadelphia Phillies franchise history — Jim Thome and Jimmy Rollins — accomplished milestone career feats on this day, June 14, 10 years apart in 2004 and 2014, respectively.

Monday, June 14, 2004

With his wife, Andrea, and daughter, Lila, in attendance, Thome launched his 400th career home run against Cincinnati Reds right-hander Jose Acevedo in the bottom of the first in a Monday evening National League matchup. Thome would go 2-4 in the game, with two runs scored and three RBI, improving his season slash to .318/.415/.682.

Late, great Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas' made the iconic call of Thome's home run.

Ten years after Thome's blast, Rollins surpassed Mike Schmidt as the Phillies' all-time hits leader, collecting his 2,235th hit with a fifth-inning single against Chicago Cubs right-hander Edwin Jackson.

Thome is the only MLB player ever to hit his 300th (Cleveland Indians), 400th (Phillies), 500th (Chicago White Sox) and 600th (Minnesota Twins) home runs with different teams. While not yet officially retired, Rollins likely has finished his career as a three-time All-Star, 2007 National League Most Valuable Player, four-time Gold Glove Award winner, and 2008 World Series champion, among other accomplishments.

Thome powered his way to 212 more home runs — leading up to his 2018 National Baseball Hall of Fame induction. Rollins went on to collect 71 more hits with the Phillies in 2014 and 220 overall, having played with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2015 (116 hits) and the White Sox in 2016 (33 hits).

On Thursday, the Phillies will honor Thome prior to their series finale matinee against the Colorado Rockies. Just like on this day 14 years ago, his wife and daughter be in attendance. Lila will perform the National Anthem.

Both players — along with their individual career milestone plays on this day in 2004 and 2014 — are surely cemented in Phillies and Citizens Bank Park history.
