Phillies shut out by Yankees in third straight loss

Final: New York Yankees 6, Philadelphia Phillies 0  ❖  Attendance: 43,568

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — To say that tonight's game against the New York Yankees (52-25) was an uphill battle from the start for the Philadelphia Phillies (41-36) would be an understatement. Three pitches into the game, the Yankees took the lead and never looked back. Phils starter Jake Arrieta struggled with his command. Over five innings, the righty allowed six runs, with only three of those being earned, on nine hits. Coming into tonight's game, Arrieta already led the league in unearned runs with 11. After this outing, he now leads all of Major League Baseball with 14 unearned runs. The bullpen was solid after Arrieta's exit. Zac Curtis, Victor Arano and Hector Neris combined for four scoreless innings.

The Phillies offense was yet again anemic against a stellar Luis Severino. Only four Phillies recorded hits in the game and only one of the six total hits was for extra bases. However, two Phillies did extend hitting streaks. With a double in the third inning, Maikel Franco extended his hitting streak to four straight games. Scott Kingery's fifth inning single extended his streak to seven games. Outside of those small positives, there was little to enjoy about the performance of the Phils' bats.

WP: Luis Severino (12-2, 2.10 ERA)  ❖  LP: Jake Arrieta (5-6, 3.54 ERA)

The Yankees took the lead immediately. Aaron Hicks led off the game with a solo homer to center field. Two outs later, Giancarlo Stanton singled. However, he was stranded, as Gleyber Torres grounded into a force out to end the inning.

The Yanks increased their lead in the third. With one out, Hicks singled to right. Aaron Judge hit a single of his own to put runners on first and second with one out. Didi Gregorius reached on a force attempt that turned into an error by Phils second baseman Cesar Hernandez to load the bases. Stanton was retired on a strikeout for the second out of the inning and it seemed like Phillies starter Jake Arrieta could get out of the jam unscathed. The Yankees had other plans. Torres singled to left field, scoring both Hicks and Judge. Greg Bird followed with a single of his own to knock in Gregorius and make it a 4-0 game. Arrieta got Miguel Andujar to line out to third for the final out.

The Yankees tacked on another run in the fourth. Catcher Austin Romine led off the inning with a double. A wild pitch during the at-bat of pitcher Luis Severino allowed Romine to advance to third. Severino struck out for the first out. Hicks hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Romine from third base. Judge struck out for the third out.

The Yankees added on to their lead in the fifth. Gregorius led off the inning with a home-run to right-center field to make it a 6-0 game. One out later, Torres doubled on a ball just out of the grasp of center fielder Odubel Herrera. Bird walked to put runners on first and second for Andujar. He lined out to left for the second out. Arrieta was able to strike out Romine to get out of the jam and complete his outing.

The Phillies had very few offensive opportunities, as they were only able to get runners into scoring position twice in the game. The lack of offense combined with Arrieta's struggles on the mound resulted in another frustrating loss.
